Never has been buying music on CD been cheaper apart from visiting your local charity shop!There are 40 tracks here and you'll be saying all the way through the first listening: ‘**** me, did they write this too?!’Unless of course, you are a true Kinks officionardo… and thus, you wouldn't be reading this review because you would have already bought this compilation!

Disc 1 has all the main classics including Sunny Afternoon and Waterloo Sunset, which to me, is one of the best, if not the best single ever released; though held for ages at no 2 in the charts in the summer of 1967. There is beautiful singling, for instance in the slightly Eastern aching of Tired of Waiting. There is great humour in Dedicated follower of Fashion, Plastic Man and Lola. As Pete Townsend has said, Ray Davies is a great wordsmith. But It also includes some pretty rough material, which aficionados might call essential, but makes me wonder how accomplished as musicians the Kinks actually were?The second disc, generally with more recent material, is much poorer; they have lost that lovely, essential Kinks sound; there are fewer good hooks and most of the melodies, except for Celluloid Heroes and the covers, are weaker. Sadly Disk 2 waters the whole effect down for me. It would have been better if all the true essentials were issued on the one disc.

Enjoyed listening to songs from the past which I remember from my younger days

The quaity of sound on my Kinks CD was not good and then I realised: I had worn it out!!! So when I saw this CD, with such a huge selection of the Kinks' songs, I could wait to buy it. it does not disappoint - sound quality is excellent and as I have said there is a huge selection of their beautiful songs. love it!
