He could not make out most of the conversations, never mind the subtle background noise or off-screen audio. And that took away a large part of the entertainment from his retired life. He was not watching movies etc with my mom (who's got perfect hearing). The only way he could understand the newsreader etc, was by cranking up the volume, and that is no fun after a while. And oh, btw, they live in India.So when I flew back to India this time, we took two of these (my sister bought one as well - just in case we encounter any malfunctions with one) with us. Installation was a breeze - the TV needs to have an audio out (monitor,as they call it). It is solidly packaged and came with the replacement ear buds.The power supply in India is 240V, so you need a suitable converter. I got the rather heavy but solidly made Simran 200W converter (search for "SIMRAN 200 WATTS DELUXE STEP DOWN VOLTAGE CONVERTER").Hooked it all up. Tested it, and I was surprised how clear the sound was. And then handed it over to dad, who fitted it to his ears and his face just broke into this big smile. A few minutes of road-testing later, his words: "It's been so many years since I heard all those sounds coming from the TV..thank you."Installed the second one in his bedroom - and that works great as well.It's been a month or so now - I was talking to him today, and he's as happy as ever with it. He thinks it is the best electronic gadget ever.So buy it - it works as advertised. And thanks for making a fantastic product.Added: 10/20/2010: Not so perfect after all. About 3-4 weeks ago, one of the base units fizzled out. The lights just blink, and no amount of resetting it worked. No audio comes out to the headphones. Customer service was somewhat helpful - she offered a 20 dollar replacement - which i grudgingly accepted. Hopefully that is the last of it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sounds I haven't heard for a while *by J***M on Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2011* In my mid sixties, hearing is not what it used to be. I love watching TV. But, the volume always had to be "cranked up" a bit. And, I still found myself asking my wife (who has excellent hearing) to tell me what characters in the shows said in dialogue that I couldn't hear.The TV Ears 2.3 has two wonderful features. The first is that I now can wirelessly put on a set of comfortable headphones and hear everything. And, I only need to put the headphone volume control up a little bit. The other wonderful feature is that the volume is completely independent of the regular TV level. So, my wife and others can listen through the TV's normal speakers at a normal volume - or even lower tnan normal if they'd like - and I can "blast" away in my independent headset.A couple of things that make the TV Ears less than perfect:The sound quality, while better than I've been able to hear for many years, gets a "4" out of "5." It is ever so slightly "echo-y." There is a tone control which is supposed to regulate bass and treble (high and low). It doesn't seem to really change anything.While I am definitely not a "techie," I have experience with hooking up amplifiers, home theater speakers, DVD players, and other electronic equipment. And, I STILL had to think a little bit about how to hook up the TV Ears transmitter. The directions that came were excellent. They were well written and clear. But, finding the proper output ports, and adjusting the "variable" outputs to become "fixed" outputs might be a challenge for some.All in all, I'm extremely happy with the TV Ears! I enjoy hearing sounds I haven't heard for a while!! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Helpful Product for the Hearing Impaired *by D***N on Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2010* I was given these ears (wireless headphones) as a gift because I have become hearing impaired in the last few years. I had begun to play the TV so loud it bothered other people in the house. Well, the product works. I can sit anywhere in the room with the ears on and hear the TV perfectly. I wear this device and it enables me to hear the TV just like in the old days when my hearing was sharp. No sound escapes into the house or even into the room, and others are not bothered or kept awake. Problem solved.I am not saying that the sound quality is perfect but it is fine for me. I wish the battery would last longer than it does. The instructions said it would last about 10 hours, but I find it lasts about 4 or 5 hours, but that is about all I need in an average evening. I could not install it by myself but my son did in about 15 or 20 minutes. The biggest problem I have with it is that, as it is now installed, the TV sound does not work any other way. When the battery runs out there is no way to hear the TV. I have to give the ears at least an hour to recharge and cannot hear the TV at all during that time. I do not know if there is any way to fix this but I use the ears nonetheless.Bottom line: 4 out of 5 stars.
