    Great--a classic.

This is a classic account of a world as gone as the Cretaceous. Bell was an intelligent and talented man, and he wrote very well. At the time of his early safaris prior to WW I, some of the tribes had never encountered white Europeans, there were still raiders capturing natives for slavery, and the large animals were abundant. By the time he retired from ivory hunting in the 1920s, his Africa was already receding. Within another thirty or forty years, it would be the Africa of which Robert Ruark wrote.

I enjoy this book by W.D.M. Bell, I have read some of earlier writings and loved them.  This is an easy to read account of early days of elephant hunting in Africa. When it came to hunting elephant and dealing with the native people, Bell was good with both elements.  He knew how to get up close and personal with elephants, and he knew how to work with the natives as equals when it came to living among them. Reading the book makes me wish I could have been with him.
