this outlet plate looks to be narrower than standard, what are its dimensions ?

I can't measure it as it's behind the oven, however i am sure it is a standard size. In the photo it looks narrower than it is.

You need to check the paperwork with the hob. It should not be a problem although you may need to fit a small fuse box for safety as the electric ignitor may need a supply that is much less than the oven requires. The paperwork should tell you what amperage supply you need. I used this to wire an electric hob and electric oven which both needed high rated electrics.

Can this item be fixed directly to the wall without a back box?

No it definitely can not be fitted without a back box for obvious reasons of electrical safety

What back box can I use with this

depends on how much room you have and where you are positioning the socket. it is compatible with either a standard single metal back box or plastic surface mounted box.

Great Connection plate for two circuits.

I needed an extra outlet when adding an electric hob to the electric oven after removing a gas hob.. This outlet is a fantastic way of connecting up the 2 circuits and fits directly into the existing single outlet box.
