A gentle swipe will clear most dust and eraser bits, while a little bit of a harder press will get rid of all but the most stubborn shavings. It helps tremendously in keeping the side of my hand clean. They do shed a little bit at first, but that's not an issue in my application. They can also be cleaned - use warm (not hot) water and a gentle liquid castile soap (such as Dr. Bronner's), then thoroughly air dry. After a couple of years of use with illustrations and a more vigorous cleaning, these brushes get retired to become excellent electronics dusting brushes.
