I made one from 2 plastic party decanters and am able to filter well, tap or rain water with these filters. I tested the filtered water 15 ways and it passed them all. They filters can be washed and reused a couple of times. Longer lifespan when filtering only tap water, but it's good to know they'll work in an emergency situation. Simply let the filter dry COMPLETELY, the use the scotch brite to rub the outside. You don't need a lot of elbow grease. You will notice "dust" coming off it when you rub it. I use my vacuum hose beside where I am cleaning it. Rinse the filter with clean water and it's ready for another use. I have had mine for many months and my well water is terrible. I use one of these as a first filter, and then run it through another clean filter.
