The lower the number, the smaller the particle. If you have sediment, you can probably use a higher micron filter. I have a three filter in-line system. I use a progression of filters: 20, 10, 5. The larger sediment gets filtered first, then smaller particles, and finally the smallest particles. I often use a carbon filter for my last (5 micron) filter. I have well water that has a lot of sediment and a slight sulfur smell when it isn't filtered. My three filter system makes my water clear and clean. Clean enough that my family drinks it straight out of the tap.
