Beast of a mattock
This mattock is substantial in build quality. Thick on both ends. The hoe side is 3.5” wide at the tip, 3/8” thick at mid point and 1/2” thick near the handle, and 7.5” from tip to handle. Which means it’s heavy and built for serious work. . The fiber handle works well with either of the blades. Used to pry roots and smilax type vines out of the ground. Mattock blade can take a size-able chunk of soil out. A bolt is used to support the head to remain on the handle. Cost more to order from Amazon but local stores are out of stock. Have not found a stronger built mattock in local hardware stores. Well worth the effort to use. Recommend for heavy prying of roots and digging in soil (Florida).

Excellent quality and design
I use this tool primarily when making hiking trails. I use it to loosen hard clay, dig out stumps and rocks and to some extent cut small brush at ground level. I lever fairly large rocks with it and use its leverage to pull up stumps and roots. This purchase replaces the same model that I had worn down by grinding the edge. I keep the hoe end sharp to cut roots which means I sharpen the tool before virtually every use. Eventually I run out of steel. But the Fiskars mattocks have never broken. I have bent some less expensive mattocks but never the Fiskars brand. The handle technology is impressive as well. There is far less shock transmitted to your hands and arms. The handle does not slip in your hands and the size of the tool is comfortable for me, an average size man. It is more expensive than others to purchase, but in my experience lasts longer and is less expensive in the long run if you use it a lot and easier on your body when you do use it.

Good pickaxe arrived just ok
Pickaxe arrived with quarter-sized chips flaked off its "rust resistant coating", and there's already hand dirt staining on the handle. I know it's just a tool meant to slam into things repeatedly, and should get dirty and chipped up... but shouldn't it arrive in brand new condition? I'll keep the pickaxe (because I need it now, and not whenever a replacement might arrive), and time will tell whether the chips lead to problems. Otherwise, it's handsome for a pickaxe. It seems well made. Obnoxious stickers along the handle came off easily. One star deducted for imperfections on a new item. Not sure whether the fiskar factory or the amazon warehouse caused them.
