    Zero Hour: Crisis in Time

Superheroes from throughout history must work together to save the universe from collapsing into entropy. But, when the cause of this collapse is revealed, everyone is shocked and the last stand becomes tinged with tragedy.Jurgens' reset of the DC line is interesting and this volume, although feeling a little thin, does a good job of conveying the central plot. It does serve to encourage wider reading.

A brilliant read. More direct than Crisis In Infinite Earths, but a great follow up. Now need to collect all of the Armageddon 2001 series.

    A mess

Like most 1990s “event” comics, ‘Zero Hour’ isn’t so much a “story” as it is a means to an end. It was nothing more than a way for DC to tidy up some of the inconsistencies they created for themselves by not thinking their previous “Crisis” through properly, with a story thrown on top of the mess for good measure. And as such, whether looked at as a story or a “Crisis”, ‘Zero Hour’ fails in every way to live up to its prequel, which both served a legitimate purpose and was quite fun to read at the same time.Where ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ was a (mostly) self-contained story, with a beginning, middle and end, ‘Zero Hour’ feels like a jumble of inconsistent threads and ideas. The fact that this trade paperback edition doesn’t actually collect the whole story (just the core mini-series and a short prelude) exacerbates the problem, but an omnibus collection of the entire thing (like the recent “One Million” collection) would certainly be welcome but probably wouldn’t help it all that much. And that’s because, unlike ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’, this really is a mess in many ways. There is no exposition, no character development, a back-story which is hardly explained and requires extensive Wikipedia research to understand, and a very confusing structure which jumps around from place in time to place in time. Furthermore, unlike the original ‘Crisis’, the events of this story have mostly been forgotten in DC lore, so I wouldn’t even be able to suggest it to those who want to read all of the major DC milestones. However, despite its many glaring problems, I still enjoyed ‘Zero Hour’. If you read and enjoyed the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ you might find this fun, in a morbidly curious type of way. I wouldn’t recommend it, as such, but I appreciated some of the imaginative and extravagant scenes. As a fan of DC Crises going back to the first ‘Crisis on Multiple Earths’ collection, I also appreciated some of the nods to that story, such as the Specter’s role. Aside from that though, there’s not a lot going for this one.
