I purchased this one but it gives me a different reading from each year one of them 97 the other is 99.9 why? And which one should I take ?

Happens to me too. I discovered it could be several factors: different insertion in the ear, earwax and the last time it happened to me my daughter had an ear infection in the ear with the higher reading. After her ear infection was cured the reading was just +- .2 different between the 2 ears.

Can you take a self reading, or do you need to see it to position correctly?

That is a good question. The tip of this thermometer is designed so you can take a self reading. It will display the temperature taken on the screen long enough for you to be able to read it after a reading, or you can use the memory function to access the prior reading.
