Review: Excellent Multi-Region Blu-Ray and All Region DVD Player - Updated: 8th July 2024 I found a problem today with the remote/power on button so contacted the seller, however after reading Sony's website I spotted the reason why. In the Setup option in the main menu there is an option for System Settings, under this is an option for HDMI Settings, in here there is on/off option to disable/enable link to TV. if you are NOT linking this player directly to a TV and using maybe a HDMI Switch box, Projector etc, you will find the remote contol and power on/off button on the player has no effect, and the only way to power it up is to unplug the power lead from the rear and back in again, however If you set the System Settings->HDMI Settings to OFF, the remote and power button will work as expected. - see attached image. This is what Sony report on this feature: "If the player is not connected directly to the TV via the HDMI® cable, disconnect the HDMI from the player and press the power button on the unit. once the unit has powered on, plug in the HDMI cable, then turn off the Control for HDMI from the Setup->System Settings->HDMI Settings menu." Original Review 28th June 2024 I bought one of these over a year ago and was impressed with the size and quality. On that instance I was sold a Sony BDP-S1700. The unit arrived with remote, batteries, HDMI cable (fairly long) and Power Adaptor with continental adaptor. Full instructions were enclosed and also a sheet of paper lightly taped to the top of the player and also in the box. It made clear that the DVD/Blu-Ray drawer needed to be open and then using the coloured remote buttons to select the correct zone (Yellow = A, Blue = B and Red = C) All works perfectly and i have been able to switch between regions perfectly every time. I needed another play for another room, and ordered this one as I was unable to find the same player again, but was pleasantly suprised when it arrived to find it was exactly the same player with same sheet of instructions and again was a Sony BDP-S1700. all the accessories were exactly the same and again it worked exactly the same. Quality of the Picture is fine, and on the rear of the unit is a connection for Digital Audio, HDMI, Power Connection and also RJ45. The RJ45 is a normal network connection, so the unit can be connected to the Internet to download Apps or even do Firmware updates (something I won't do in case it messes up the Multi-Region options) but would certainly use for Apps. The Options/Setup menu allows changing other features and Audio Output. The remote is small and perfectly functional and others have added photos of theirs which is the same. I have not seen the one with the A/B/C buttons as per other buyers, but if you should have problems changing the regions, maybe my instructions above might help. I have connected mine via HDMI to my system and the audio is split into Optical for the 5.1 as I have multiple media devices connected so it was easy to do this to feed the one optical connection on my amplifier. All in all, this player is fantastic value for money, and so easy to change regions, it saved me when my TV service went down and I needed to watch my series on blu-ray only to find I had bought Region A blu-ray, so its been an asset! Highly recommended - but don't lose the piece of paper!
Review: This one actually works! - I wanted a region-free DVD player (region-free Blu-ray would be a bonus) and I coveted this Sony BDPS1700B, but I hesitated to part with £160. So I ordered an desertcart Renewed Sony BDPS3700B which was advertised as region-free DVD plus Region B-only Blu-ray, and offered at £79.99. I always prefer Sony products and was pleased to find that this unit was great in every respect, except that it would only play Region 2 discs, so I sent it straight back. I then tried a refurbished LG BP-250 (£123.33) that promised all-region DVD and Blu-Ray with full instructions and a 6-foot HDMI lead. On arrival, it failed to deliver on all these promises and would only to play UK region discs, no instructions and no lead. By this time, I had had enough, so I decided to bite the bullet and go for the Sony BDPS1700B. I wish now that I hadn't wasted my time with the other players. The 1700B worked immediately, came with proper instructions and is my favourite brand. I am highly satisfied with the picture and sound quality, and my Region 1 DVDs play without fuss. Whilst I was waiting for my first Region-A disc to arrive from the US, I tested the USB feature and, sure enough, it works well. Photos, videos and music files can be selected via a menu. On its arrival, I immediately inserted the American Blu-ray, pressed the necessary region select button on the remote control, closed the tray and voila! the disc played perfectly. DVDs play automatically whatever their region encoding but, with Blu-ray, it is necessary to select the region by pressing (whilst the tray is open) the red button on the remote for Region-A, the green for Region-B or the yellow for Region-C. This is all fully explained in the instruction booklet, but what is not made clear is that nothing appears to happen when a coloured button is pressed. However, on closing the tray, the player will be set to the region you selected and the disc will be played. The player remembers the region until you change it to another. Very impressive. My only slight quibble is that the unit has no WiFi facility, but it can be connected by a LAN cable for updating the internal firmware and accessing the included BBC iPlayer app. (I chose to leave it connected to a cheap-as-chips WiFi extender plugged in to the mains socket next to that of the player). It seems a little mean of Sony not to offer this feature on such a relatively expensive player when it is included on the cheaper models. So, do I recommend this player? You bet I do! If you can afford it, buy it: if you can't afford it, save-up for it; you won't be disappointed.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sony is still the best at this.

Bought to replace my previous Sony multi region Blu-ray player which was beginning to show its age after eight years of faithful service. This was easy to install, only taking a couple of minutes. Literally, plug and play. The instructions for switching blu regions couldn't be easier. (You don't need to switch anything with standard dvd, it's automatic.) The picture quality is stunning - and it came with a two year warranty.
