Does the camera have to stay plugged in or does the cord actually charge it?

No I thought it was gonna be a charger so I didn’t have to use batteries, but I was sadly mistaken. It just turns the power on while being plugged up, when you unplug it, the camera turns off— at least mine does Canon B500.

Will this work with a ge x500 coolpix camera (virtually the same). does it plug into the usb socket or another one?

We don't know the GE X500 coolpix camera. Possibly this adapter should not be able to work with it. This adapter kit uses ac power cord so it doesn't plug into the USB socket. The power transformer convert the ac power into dc power directly.
