I didn't take that advice at first and then my valve cores would get gummed up and bent and leak air when I unscrewed them to add air or get sticky and stuck so I couldn't add air. I just replaced one with this product and I easily added air to my tire and went for a ride the next day. Everything seems to be good. No issues. If it is removable, you will see a flat spot on the end like the picture. You can use a tool or needle nose pliers to remove it. It should not be a problem fitting a 48 mm valve stem **Q: will they work on a 42mm stem?** A: Yes! The core is agnostic of stem size or brand as long as it's a presta stem. **Q: What is the screw size for the part that screws into the stem and for the dust cap screw?** A: According to wikipedia, both threads are 12-24. I looked at my valve cores and they do look bigger than #10. The threads for the dust cap are much deeper than the threads for the core.
