The Woman in Me

This was such an interesting and emotional read. It kept my attention from beginning to end and gave a very personal look at her experiences. I finished it much faster than I expected because I kept wanting to read more.

The best thing about The Woman In Me is its honest, natural narrative. Without any pretension, the book is a window into the intimate past of one of the most recognizable icons of pop culture and entertainment. I can say that it has exceeded my expectations and reminded me that things are almost never as they seem or as we believe them to be.

No offense to Brit. I wasn’t a fan at the very beginning of her career. It was still early on though when I noticed the vitriol aimed at her by the media and it turned me almost overnight into a diehard fan. Why? Because she still had the grace, strength and courage to smile and perform through all of that negativity. And when she spoke, it was obvious to me that she had a really good heart, something very hard to find in Hollywood. I don’t agree with everything she says or believe everything she does, but I respect her as a fellow human being. I never felt like the conservatorship was necessary. I always believed she was abused and blindsided. I personally think if others didn’t see it, it’s simply because they didn’t want to. Many still don’t. There always was something childlike about Britney, and that’s apparent in her writing style. It’s the same style she uses on IG—minus the emojis and her excessive use of punctuation marks. I will say that I was expecting worse. (Sorry, Brit…) Having read most stories and listened to most reports about her from the beginning of her career until about 2010, I didn’t need a lot of details about anything in particular and I felt like enough was given. Having confirmation was far more useful as it was always somewhat questionable what was fact and what was opinion. Just look at some other reviews talking about her taking drugs. She never tested positive for any drugs, yet because the accusation came up a number of times, certain people will always believe she used them. Don’t we believe in innocent until proven guilty? I guess only some of us do. Shout out to all the “perfect” people. If your life was on display every time you got too close to a window, I guarantee you’d be “caught” doing things you’d also never live down because the other “perfect” people wouldn’t let you either. I’m not exaggerating about the window scenario either. Read other celebrities’ accounts of dealing with pushy paparazzo. Tabloids hired ex-cons because they were desperate for jobs and were willing to cross boundaries to get that “money shot “. These were not normal, everyday people. Must have felt nice terrorizing people to paint them as bad guys then turning around and acting like victims when the celebrities fought back. By the way, JT once fought back too when he and Brit were dating. Anyway, to those who were hoping for more of the gory details, it’s hard for traumatized people to do that. Recounting abuse—specifically when the wounds are still fresh—in vivid detail is triggering. I have to ask: is her mental health at all important in your mind? I don’t personally need to know specifics. I got the gist. I only really held back a star because I wish she had asked for help to write the book. She skipped around a bit in a few places that made it seem haphazard. One time I was left wondering what one thing had to do with another in the same paragraph. The book felt like a conversation. Some people would probably really enjoy that. I’m not very keen on it, but it was an easy read, so there’s that. I honestly think Britney should get off social media because the more she posts, the more she does to herself exactly what the paps did to her previously. It’s not empowering to facilitate your own bad press. I come away from the book feeling like that’s her view. But in the end, she’s just self sabotaging which tells me she needs a better therapist—if she has one at this point considering how hard it is now to trust exactly that kind of person. Perhaps she needs to hire a proper PR team. This book was a step in the right direction, at least.

This is an easy read, a nice break from some of the other books I've been reading lately. This book can be read in an afternoon. The first three chapters or so are scattered and Britney jumps all over the place, like she couldn't string a coherent thought. But after that she gets her act together and the book becomes readable. She's been through a lot and after reading her book, I empathize with her and all she went through. There are some juicy tidbits and salacious stories like when she lost her virginity, and how wild she was as a child. It's a decent book and an easy read.

My mom loves this book, she was so happy when she got it, she is a huge Britney Spears fan after reading it she put it on her shelf with the rest of her little collection

If you love Britney, then this book is for you. It’s like she is sitting in a room with you and having a girl talk. Straight from her mouth details of her life and career.

I'm only a third way in. Shipped lightening fast. The print quality of the book is very good. I like the rose and the purple foil, they captured her taste here and will look bomb on my bookshelf. As for the writing it's good. Amazing, no. But they painted an incredible picture of her life. Much better writing than I thought to be honest. I was expecting more scattered blurbs throughout the book but the way it's presented does honor her experience, and sounds like her up to an extent. Now, I do think the ghost writer went verbose in some areas that were unnecessary which derailed her voice in my head but I imagine getting the whole picture would be difficult. I was hoping for a thicker book as she's been through a lot. So I am a bit disappointed at that but nevertheless it's an interesting read thus far. As for Britney's life story. I have to say they were smart in starting with her lineage and she didn't hold back keeping her family accountable from the gate. Good on her for having conviction. I suddenly found myself understanding little quirks, connecting the dots, certain things would suddenly click in my head. For example her British accent and her relationship with a lynchpin matriarch elder. Very cool build up. Laying the ground work for her future decisions by presenting us with complex childhood family dynamics really has me understanding her choices and quirks much better than I ever realized I needed to be deep in thought of. Sometimes we judge from a place of pity or outsider perspective instead of compassion. Now I see the soft gentle feminine side of her mindset that we knew when she was younger start to peek through the pages. It's that sweet part of her soul that she doesn't show much nowadays, for good reason of course as she's been deeply hurt and damaged by other's greed, but that delicate nature is part of why most of us were charmed by her. I hope she finds her way back one day. She's been through a lot and I found myself relating to things she'd been through, and feeling deeply saddened by her sense of insecurity in childhood. Her insights correlate along with many of my own life experiences and traumas. I was taken aback by her growth in reflection, as one would believe anger would be the easy way to portray her story, not the case here, it's her appreciation for her past that has earned my deep respect beyond what I thought I had possessed prior to reading. Her story with her brother was touching and softened my distain for his participation in the matter of handling her affairs. Although I hope he is held accountable someday. It shows how loving and innocent she was and how grave a loss she has suffered, for it is those who are selfless that don't speak up only to suffer the most. Such a contrast to the presentation of her character in the media. Thus far this book is an excellent read! ------ To be Continued * I'm looking forward to reading through this book in it's entirety and will update when I'm done. One star for the writing not sounding like her in some places. I will change accordingly.

Speechless and sad. A must read for everyone. I'm glad she finally wrote this book. Must have been very therapeutic for her. On the surface, we think celebs hv a better life than us but we're wrong. Shame on everyone who let her down esp her family. This is the one book that I cdnt stop reading. It ws very well written. Chapters are short,she doesn't dwell and dt makes it evn more interesting. Great book!

Britney is an inspiration. She did start out young and then controlled all those hard years, just sad that she had to go through that. Very good read I read it in two days. I will Always be a Britney fan!
