## Description

Review: An adorable tactical puzzler... - When you're gen x like me, you kind of learned to lean towards action adventures or third person shooters out of an almost pavlovian negative stimulus response held over from the bad old days of the VGA turned based RPG. Gen Xers by now are already wincing and laughing with hysterical tears of remembered agony at that, I know. For those that blissfully DON'T remember those days, suffice it to say that there was a point not that many years in the horrifying past when game developers thought that any old 16-bit sprite would do as long as you slapped the words RPG (RolePlaying Game) in front of it and, of course, being too cheap to develop actual GAME MECHANICS, these games always used turn based mechanics based on the old RNG (random number generator- the computer equivalent of rolling the dice). So, yeah, us hardened gaming vets of Gen X age and older generally tend to shiver in horror if not openly WEEP as our PTSD flashbacks invoke blue green visions of mashing the spacebar over and over in a vain effort to just. get. ON. WITH. THE. DANGED. GAME. AL.REA.DY!!!!! *ahem* Sorry, where was I? Oh yes, turned based games. I picked up Mario+Rabbids because I had heard from my younger friends and family that turn based games had changed and that this game was PERFECT for an aging puzzler like myself to try out the new mechanics that many (not ALL! I was warned but many) games have developed during the years that I had been attending my court appointed VGA RPG Survivors Support Group meetings. (Rest assured that I have indeed learned that all Computer Lives Matter and that a sledgehammer to the motherboard is not an acceptable rejoinder to a badly made game). Any-way, point is that these tactical turn based mechanics are honestly really FUN as is this game! I won't front, I am a sucker for a good gag delivered with nice timing and tongue firmly placed in cheek and in that respect, Mario et al and the Rabbids do not fail. Mechanics-wise, my PTSD is actually starting to respond to this exposure therapy and it certainly helps that it's liberally laced with lots of relaxing puzzles as well as mellow exploration of a very beautifully created environment. Basically? It's a really well done game period. Animation is gorgeous, humor isn't just a chuckle worthy sight gags either as it shows a remarkable amount of self-awareness on the part of the game developers and while the puzzles aren't exactly diabolically difficult- there are a lot of them and the more mellow level of thought fits far better with the game's easy going nature than they would have if they HAD been really tough. The level of thought during the tactical battles is a little higher than that of the puzzles but not sooo tough that even a total noob to these tactical turn based games can't muddle her way through after a couple of tries. I have been told that the RPG-type progression system has beem streamlined, which for someone new to this kind of combat is perfect but for someone well used to it, might want to find a challenge somewhere that's else. This is NOT to say to them to guve it a miss because, they might very well enjoy the more relaxed and humor filled nature of it the same way I have been enjoying the puzzles in this game but, basically? Yeah, this game isn't for banging your head against a wall trying to figure out whatever you're stuck on- it's for relaxing with for a little while and maybe getting an unexpected chuckle or two. As that type of game? Yes, this game not only wears that fact on its sleeve PROUDLY, it steaks it's claim on that spot with quite a few rocket launchers and maybe a hand grenade or two. So, no matter your age or game style preference (except oddly enough, platformer-go figure! Lol), whether it's tactical turn based, puzzler or even a little RPG, Mario+Rabbids is a nice little rest and relaxation that has been nothing short if enjoyable.
