Maggie (Hathaway) is an alluring free spirit who won't let anyone--or anything--tie her down. But she meets her match in Jamie (Gyllenhaal), whose relentless and nearly infallible charm serve him well with the ladies and in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie and Jamie's evolving relationship takes them both by surprise, as they find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love. "A great rom-com pairing" **** Sunday Mirror "Smart, sexy and buckets of charm" **** Daily Express "Truly addictive romance" ***** Now Last paired up for Brokeback Mountain , Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal reunite for this romantic take on Jamie Reidy's Hard Sell . The story takes place in the 1990s when a certain blue pill made its debut. Gyllenhaal's Jamie, a smooth-talking pharmaceutical rep, meets Hathaway's Maggie, an aspiring artist, while trying to persuade her physician (Hank Azaria) to carry Pfizer products. The attraction is instant, but Jamie prefers the thrill of the chase to anything more meaningful. While he and his partner (Oliver Platt, Azaria's Huff co-star) work on a transfer from Ohio to Illinois, Jake and Maggie's fling develops into a relationship. On the comic side, Jamie battles with a rival rep (Gabriel Macht), switches from Zoloft to Viagra, and gains a roommate in his socially inept brother (Josh Gad, good value). On the dramatic side, he gets a glimpse of Maggie's world, which involves trips to Canada for medication and the temporary loss of motor skills (the screenplay fails to explain how she can afford such a spacious loft). Not counting shows like Thirtysomething , Edward Zwick remains best known for docudramas like Defiance , and Love and Other Drugs marks a new direction. The dialogue is snappy and the actors are game--both show a fair amount of skin--but the two halves of the film make for an awkward fit. Still, it's nice to see Gyllenhaal cut loose for a change. If Hathaway gives a more self-conscious performance, she brings the requisite amount of spirit and dignity to her role. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Review: A wonderful movie about the reality of the human condition. - I saw this again today, after having seen it when it was first released; and, being a little older, and a little more world weary, made it even more poignant than the first time around. This isn't your average romcom; it's about us; we, as people whom often live our lives not really understanding or even seeing what our lives are really about, until someone shows you, you. The human condition is painful, and complex, and often the reality of it is hidden by the daily BS we wade through; unthinking and blind, but Maggie is one of those rare characters that can see right through it all. If this film doesn't make a person pause and think about thier life, and those less fortunate that are all around us, then I think there is something fundamentally wrong with them as a person. I feel pity for those reviewers whom only gave it 1 star "waiting for something to happen" because that's probably how thier lives are, and it's only at the end credits of their lives that they will realise, too late, what this film, and thier lives, was about. Review: I enjoyed the connections between the characters - I enjoyed the connections between the characters. Diving into how people think and react under certain scenarios. It made me laugh and cry, tut and cry again. It makes you think about how you can accomplish anything in life if you put your mind to it but what really matters the money or what your heart desires not your head. I watched it twice.

OK, but a little lack-lustre near the end...
What starts off promising rom-com turns a bit lack-lustre near the end. Enjoyable, but also very heavy! Would recommend, but again make sure you're willing to go the 'long haul' to get to the end as most would get a little bored at places. Very funny in other places though thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal

Great Love Story
Brilliantly acted. Bit predictable, but well filmed enjoyable love story. Good entertainment and really worth the watch. Lots of messages in there if you really want to start looking. I loved it for what it was , certainly something you can watch and enjoy more than once. Highly Recommended

just not funny
Problem was it wasn't funny, certainly not a fraction as funny as it thought it was - amazed at how good many of the reviews. Both stars tried hard hard - too hard - and that too was part of the problem

I Loved This Movie On So Many Levels!!
Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway give wonderful heartfelt, as well as heart-warming performances in this romantic comedy / drama. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a film like this, because most are contrived and lack any real depth to them. Not the case with this movie. It's funny, it's mature, it's sexy, and it rings true on many levels...I won't give it away, but it's damn good. I rented it first, then I went right out and bought it in the same day. Life is about intimacy v.s. distance, joy v.s. pain, laughter v.s. tears, and all those other opposing dichotomies, which we must learn (hopefully) in our lifetimes to balance, to maintain a full and healthy exsistence, or better yet, a co-exsistence, while we are here. Oh yeah, and on a purely primal and somewhat adolescent level, I REALLY REALLY LOVED seeing JAKE GYLLENHAAL NAKED, a lot, in all of his god-given finery, during this film! (-: Anne Hathaway has a lot of buff time as well, and has a nice physique, but I'm not so much into the females. But, back to reality, this is a great film...full of laughs and poignant moments.
