Ever since I was a teenager with a few hairs on my face, I’ve always used a disposable razor. Not the greatest but it worked. Then when cartridge razors came out, I moved into those and my shaving improved. Now that I’m fifty-two, I was curious about a safety razor. I wanted to see and feel if there’s a difference between a cartridge razor and a safety razor. To my surprise, there’s a Huge Difference. After doing my due diligence for a High Quality Starter Safety Razor. My Daughter gifted me, this Edwin Jagger Short Handled Double Edge Safety Razor. The first thing that got my attention after it arrived, was how neat and professional this razor was packaged. It’s a reflection of how serious this company is about the products they offer. I easily installed the razor blade onto the safety razor, applied soap to my face, and begin to shave. The first thing I felt was how close the razor shaved my face. WOW!!! I was use to a longer handle razor and thought this shorter handle was going to be an issue. But after a month of using this razor, I got use to the shorter handle without a problem. After shaving going down with the grain, what stood out was how clean the shave left my face. If I ever need a quick and clean shave, I just shave going with the grain and done. Next, I shaved against the grain and was Amazed how smoother and cleaner my face got. Shaving with this Edwin Jagger Razor took my shaving experience to a Higher Level. No Joke! After touching up my face here and there, I was convinced and sold, I would replace my cartridge razors for this Edwin Jagger Razor. It’s High Quality and Excellent Craftsmanship. In my humble opinion, it’s Best-Of-Class. I highly recommend this Edwin Jagger as a starter safety razor. Makes an excellent gift for Dads, Bosses, Brothers, and those Gentlemen in your life. I've experimented with 5 different brands of DE blades. Prior to that I used a Cut Throat razor of excellent quality from an independent website. I've also used both the Feather SS and the Feather DX. My findings are as follows: The Cut Throat or Straight Razor by Ralf Auste was beautiful and high quality. Straight Razor shaving has a substantial learning curve. Once mastered, it is a guaranteed close shave (this is the method used by traditional barbershops). I tried three or four times, and ended up cutting myself to the point where I needed to wait a week before my next attempt (my beard, though, grows very slowly and is not that heavy). I finally gave it up as every shaving attempt with the straight razor was a dance with the blood transfusion devil. There are thousands of videos on line of guys having no trouble getting a close shave with straight razors. It just wasn't worth the blood letting for me to try and get there. The Feather SS was a light straight razor type of shave. It is a non folding razor that takes Feather blades. A very promising system to get a close shave with a well made and designed product. Tried several shaves with this and was similar to the straight razor (CutThroat) but with better results and less blood. Still, with the Feather Blades, there were plenty of cuts. The Feather DX is like the SS, only the blade holder is heavier in the hand and on the face. Harder for me to master. More cuts than the SS. Still, this system, I think, is worth trying, along with the SS, for those who can master it. Learning curve is still there, but not as steep as the traditional folding straight razor. Next was the DE razor. I tried the Jaeger, and both Viking razors (Chieftain and the Godfather). They were all very easy to use, very well designed and high quality razors. The most noticeable difference is that The Chieftain is a butterfly mechanism, which is very convenient for switching blades and cleaning the razor between shaves. The Jaeger and the Godfather are the more prevalent screw top DE razors where one has to unscrew the top of the razor from the handle in order to remove and clean the blade. I have to say, for a guy who started out with a DE shaver (think the original Gillette double edge razor that your dad used), and then moved on to an electric for many years, THE DE SHAVERS OF TODAY, WITH THE APPROPRIATE BLADE, ARE THE WAY TO GO. That said, the choice of blade and the choice of razor will determine what system is best for you. There's no such thing as THE BEST BLADE, nor is there such a thing as THE BEST DE RAZOR. Every person is different, with different skin type, different facial topography, for want of a better word. Different people have different facial hair types, light beards or heavy beards. Fast growing or slow. Curly or straight, etc. One needs to experiment in order to know what combination of razor and blade and technique is best for them. While I still cut myself with all of the DE razors I used, I have to say that it was my fault and that the cuts were easily treated with the use of a styptic pencil and/or an alum bar. The system that was best for me included the use of a Treet Platinum Super Stainless Blade (very inexpensive and made in Pakistan). There are literally hundreds of blades made all over the world. It's almost impossible to try all of them. One can obtain a SAMPLE PACK with some of the most used blades (one blade each of several brands), which is what I did, but I only tried five different brands, and each of those brands was consistently rated high in Amazon, but was also rated "not aggressive "(i.e., perhaps not so likely to result in facial cuts). And it's not totally the "sharpness" of the blade. Some very "sharp" blades are good for beginners (non aggressive) and some are not. . One needs to do some research, and in the end actually shave with a blade to determine if it's for you). My shave with the Viking Godfather was slightly better than with the Jaeger or the Chieftain (which were similar). The Godfather has a longer handle than most, which I grew to appreciate. It is also a non aggressive razor with a Safety Type head. Some razors do not have this type of head. Some are very open (i.e, more of the blade is exposed to the skin). This latter type is more aggressive and takes more technique to get a close shave without cuts. Still, many people with heavier beards or non sensitive skin prefer this type of razor without the safety bar head. Some who prefer this more aggressive type razor will also prefer a blade known for its sharpness and its tendency to cause cuts.(Think the very highly rated Feather Blades). Better technique in shaving is also required of these more aggressive razors. The length and type of handle can also be an issue. The Jaeger razor I used has a very short handle. It often comes in different colors which are slick. Mine was ordered with the stainless steel knurled handle, so I didn't have the slippery problems some people might experience with the smooth handles. It should be noted that in testing each razor, my face was prepared the same: First a hot towel on my face for 2 minutes. Then a scrubbing with Poraso shaving cream (The green tube). Then another hot towel for a minute. Then an application of a quality shaving oil worked into the beard. Then while the oil was doing its thing, I'd prepare my shaving cream/soap with a good quality shaving brush (There are plenty high quality soaps, creams and brushes on the market. They run the gamut on price, but one does not have to spend a lot of money to get a high quality brush or shave cream. They're kind of like smoking pipes. If you want a trendy design or a rare wood or the best quality Boars Hair brush, then you can pay into the hundreds of dollars. A reasonable quality brush can be had for $25.00 to $35.00 dollars, and shaving cream from the bigger suppliers can be had for $6.00 to $20.00). Then an application of the shaving cream (worked into a lather in my shaving bowl), working the lather as best as possible into the skin with my brush. Then a first pass with strokes of the razor downward only. Then a second pass, with strokes upward (some experts say to leave the upward strokes to the third pass or not at all). Then a quick tidy up of the two or three spots that still need a light going over. For many, the above routine takes up too much time and is just a hassle that's not worth it. I respect that. Whatever works for your individual situation is best. I'm 67 and recently retired, so free time is not a problem. I also shave every other day. For me, I could barely feel the Godfather with the Treet blade, even on the upstroke. I could hear the blade cutting the hairs, but the blade going across my face was very smooth and not pulling at all. All the razors I tried were this way, but the Godfather was just slightly better in this regard. I hope all this helps if you're interested in wet shaving.

As an absolute beginner to safety razors, I picked this Edwin Jagger Kelvin razor as my first safety razor after a lot of research and debate. After hours of reading reviews on Amazon for the Merkur 34C, and the Edwin Jagger DE89.. I decided I wanted something a little less common than the 34C, and with a little more grip than the DE89. This Amazon exclusive Kelvin seemed to fit the bill, until I read about how short the handle was. The handle is about 3'' long, and almost looked almost too short to hold. I read many reviews on how the shorter handle actually increases grip, and is comfortable even for those with large hands. Today was my first shave with a safety razor, and I'm extremely happy to have picked the Kelvin as my first safety razor. I used Astra Platinum blades and RazoRock XXX Shave Soap, and had great results. The Kelvin was easy to hold in my large hands, had great grip even though my hands were a little wet, and seems very well built. This razor is perfect for a beginner like myself, and comes with the same head as the famous beginner razor.. the Edwin Jagger DE89. Today I had the best shave of my life, and I'll never go back to disposable or cartridge razors again. Overall, I'd buy this razor again if mine broke or went missing. ________ REVIEW UPDATE ________ The review above was written in October of 2015, this update is being written on December 14th, 2018. I've thought about getting another razor because the experience with this Edwin Jagger has been nothing but satisfying. Honestly though, I don't see anything being better than this. My best friend is getting one from me for Christmas this year, and he's going to love it. I've shaved every two or three days with this razor for the last 38 months with very minimal cuts and always a smooth shave (using Astra blades, for those wondering). I ordered the knurled short handle option, which helps get a pretty shave below the nose, side burns, and around the edge of the mouth while maintaining a good grip. Finish: 8.5/10 Very easy to clean and polish. The screw threading on the handle is starting to oxidize a bit, even with regular cleaning. Other than that, the finish looks brand new after all this time. Value: 8/10 This was a fantastic razor for the last 3 years, but there are others out there with this price ($35 at time of purchase, and at the time of this writing) that seem like a slightly better deal. Usability: 9.5/10 I rate this 9.5 because it's been the best travel razor I've ever owned. The short handle model is perfect for a small toiletry bag, and I've taken many trips with it. My girlfriend who has small hands uses (steals 😉) my razor and loves using it for her legs.

Nice razor but too mild for my tastes. I bought this razor because I wanted a bit of a change from the Merkur 23C I bought at The Art of Shaving a few years ago. Then, I went of the salesperson's recommendation and was looking into getting into wet shaving (mostly to get away from the expense of cartridges). When I bought this razor, I had a lot more information from my lurking in wet shaving forums and reviews from popular wet shaving youtubers. I'd known for a while that the Edwin Jagger DE89 was a popular razor out there. I kept putting off a decision to buy that razor, remembering that the purpose of my wet shaving was to keep the expense down in that activity. Recently, I noticed the Edwin Jagger Kelvin pop-up in my Amazon recommended (I browse a lot of DE razor gear on here). The handle of my 23C is pretty long and can get unwieldy in difficult areas like the back of my head (oh, I should mention I shave my head) and around my ears. I heard a few head shavers in the wet shaving community use short handles to keep a good control going when reaching those areas. So, I decided to plunge in and get the Kelvin. It seemed like a DE89 with a short, knurled handle. I thought that would be a perfect change from my old trusty 23C. However, it ended up being too mild a shave for me. It feels pretty good and glides well across the skin but never had the feeling of being too effective in cutting the hairs. I tried this for a few weeks and noticed I had to do quite a few touch-up passes after my normal 3 pass shave to get my beard/head down to where I felt comfortable with the result. I never got BBS when using this razor. I've tried concentrating on the angle and I always shave with a new blade, as my head hair is much coarser than my beard and tends to dull blades after one shave. I do a decent amount of prep beforehand including a pre-shower lather on my face and scalp to soften hair before I soak it in the shower. As my shaves were taking longer with this razor, I tried taking the bulk of the hair down the night before and doing a cleanup in the morning. That just started irritating my skin, as the time between shaves didn't allow my skin to fully heal from the shave the night before. Eventually, I just caved in and bought a slant to increase the efficiency of the shave in not requiring as many passes to remove the hair. Overall, I'm not taking the rating down that far because it did do a decent job on my face and was a mild shave (as was expected when I bought the product). I just needed the practical lesson in what a 'mild' shave was and that it wouldn't work for my situation. The razor wasn't bad, overall, it just wasn't up to the task of what I was putting it to use for. I'm sure there are a few reviews out there that contradict my experiences but I did try to make this product work for me and it didn't happen. Edwin Jagger makes fine products and I'll not leave the razor to idle on the stand. I'll keep experimenting with it to see if my own errors were part of the problem but more than likely I'll pass it on to a friend or family member to start their own wet shaving journey. We are all different and what doesn't work for me might be the very thing to jump-start a young (or older) man to kick the cartridge money-drain. Oh, the shipping was very quick and the packaging was very good.

Want to have a sharp blade every time you shave? Without breaking the bank? Then you may want to consider switching from a cartridge razor to a safety razor. I had no interest in picking up a new hobby or collecting bathroom accessories. I just wanted a consistent shave with a sharp razor, no tugging or abrasion, every single time. After reading many Amazon reviews for multiple safety razors, "beginner" and not, I selected this one as the one to keep and not need a future upgrade. It has been a great choice. The head has just enough weight to shave well without any added pressure. The crosshatching on the handle provides a positive grip even when wet. When you use a light two finger and thumb grip close the the head, it doesn't matter how long the handle is. The assembly operation is positive, the threads are smooth, the plating on all three pieces is outstanding. The blade is angled well and the head size allows close shaving under your nose. A truly fine instrument for this price. There are many articles and YouTube videos on how to use a safety razor, but here's the minimalist version: buy this razor, a package of Astra Platinum blades and a blade bank. Done. Use the shave *gel* you already have or try a shave cream in a tube (Cremo Silver/Birch works well and smells great). Rub it on with your wet hand. My goal is to make my face slick, not create a spa experience. My beard is already clean and softened from a shower. Start shaving on a smooth, flat area and you'll feel and hear the correct angle very quickly, this razor is very forgiving. I only make one pass, just as with a cartridge razor and I have a beard that requires a daily shave. No multiple passes, no multiple directions. That's it. Your goals may be different and YMMV. Hope it helps someone give it a try though.

IMO there is nothing better than the Gillette Fusion razors. Close shave, no injuries, can use in the shower without a mirror. Just the best. However, I feel like a fool buying the far too expensive replacement blades. It is a matter of pride, not actually money, at this point. Also, there is some question about the quality of those blades sold on-line and, yes, those razor safes at stores are very annoying. I used DE razors long ago and thought I would revisit them, this time with a fairly expensive new design and with whatever improvements there have been in the blades. It is different. The Kelvin is a high quality and attractive design. Worthy of a display. Might get a nice stand some day. It is very heavy and the handle is short, the opposite of the Gillette and I am just getting used to that. I might look into a long and light DE razor some day as I still like that somewhat better. That is simply a personal preference and does not lose it a star. It came with Derby blades, the brand often suggested for new DE users. I also bought and tried the Gillette Silver Blues which are supposed to be sharper, but more aggressive and more prone to cutting, and I haven't had any nicks from either. The closeness of the shave is mostly a function of how hard you dare to press the razor to your skin and the number of passes you make. I found an old DE buried under my house when I was digging for a foundation. Of course I can't find it now, probably worth a fortune...Maybe I'll bury this under the house and a hundred years from now somebody will dig it up and wonder what the story was. And use the razor. Anyway, DE shaving is interesting what with all the different brands and shapes, made all over the world. Same for the blades and the attachments users have for particular brands. Lots of videos about techniques, lots of accessories and special creams and soaps and all. Kind of fun. Kind of a cult thing, in a good way. A superior shave? Sure, if you spend the time to make three passes and are obsessive about it. If nothing else, it is good fun and not necessarily an expensive hobby.

This is my new favorite safety razor. I've been wet shaving for good long while; I own about a dozen different vintage Gillette and Schick razors and about a half-dozen modern razors. This is the best one I've ever used, when comparing comfort and closeness of shaves given. I'd like to clear up a few things I've seen in several reviews here: "This is a short razor." - This is a standard sized safety razor. It's identical in length to almost every non-adjustable vintage Gillette I own, as well as the two Merkur razors I have. Unless you are coming from the horrible world of cartridge razors- or perhaps an adjustable or long handled safety razor- this is a normal size for a double edge razor. Yes, it is a little odd if you are new to the game but trust me, you'll get used to it, and quickly. "This razor is too light." - This one I don't understand at all; I can only assume these folks have been using solid stainless steel razors- in which case, this would seem a bit light. Again, this is a normal weight for a safety razor. It has some heft and feels very solid in the hand. If you are an experienced wet shaver, this is the best way I can describe the Kelvin: if feels like a Fat Handle Tech in the hand, provides just as comfortable a shave as said Tech, and shaves as close as a Red Tip. If you are new to wet shaving, I'll tell you this: buy the Kelvin. This razor is ridiculously cheap, high quality, and is not something you're going to outgrow in six months. This is a life-long razor. The only knock I can give the Kelvin is the pack of Derby blades it ships with; my wife's Edwin Jagger came with a pack of Feathers. If you're a newbie, I'd recommend getting yourself a blade sampler and finding which one works best for you. (With that being said, this thing is a dream with a new Astra Green inside.)

So I'm an experience traditional shaver with over 15 razors in my den, hundreds of blades, dozens of shave soaps. My second safety razor was an Edwin Jagger DE89 I purchased from Amazon and I've come to love it so much I wanted a second one with a different handle. And this one fit the bill. Edwin Jagger is known far and wide for their fit and finish and it's easy to see why. This razor (and its older brother) is simply gorgeous: gleaming chrome that's perfect in every way. Of course, looks mean little if the doggone thing doesn't do a good job of delivering a great shave. Well, rest assured, the DE89 head does a great job every time. I'm a believer in the "mild razor/sharp blade" formula and the EJ qualifies as a relatively mild razor. I use good blades in it (Gillette Nacets, Perma-Sharps, Astra SPs. Wizamet Super Iridiums, etc.) and this razor literally never fails to deliver a great shave. The design and the excellent quality control result in a close but smooth shave every time as long as you use good technique. For the price at which they're offered, there is no question in my mind that the Edwin Jagger DE89 is simply the best value in double edge safety razors. You can spend a whole lot more but you won't necessarily get a better shave or a more beautiful razor.

Da ich sehr empfindliche Haut habe, benutze ich meistens den Edwin Jagger DE89 und Merkur 37C. Seit 2015 habe ich den Edwin Jagger DE89, er sieht fast wie neu aus und er wird bestimmt noch viele Jahre aushalten. Man muss den (und generell alle Rasierhobel) nur richtig pflegen. Das heißt nach der Rasur den Rasierhobel aufmachen, Klinge raus, reinigen und trocknen lassen. So wird ein guter Rasierhobel, wie der hier, viele Jahre überleben. Ein Tipp: Einmal pro Jahr den Rasierhobel mit kochendem Wasser reinigen und voilà! Wie neu. Meiner Meinung nach soll jeder, der sich mit Rasierhobel rasiert, den DE89 haben. Edwin Jagger DE89 super sanft aber noch gründlich. Ich kann jedem den Edwin Jagger DE89 (oder seinen Brüder Mühle R89) empfehlen. Der ist ein wunderbarer Rasierhobel. Tipps für Einsteiger in der Nassrasur: -- Einen guten hochwertigen Rasierhobel besorgen Edwin Jagger DE89 (Mühle R89, die Köpfe sind gleich) ist eine sehr gute Wahl -- Rasierklinge Astra Rasierklinge sind sehr gut für Einsteiger sowie Erfahrenen -- Pre-Shaving Creme benutzen Proraso Pre-Shaving Creme Weiß -- eine gute Rasierseife besorgen Es gibt so viele interessante Rasierseifen; Die Proraso Rasierseife Weiß ist eine gute Wahl für Einsteiger -- Einen guten Rasierpinsel besorgen Die guten Rasierpinsel sind nicht so günstig, aber lieber von Anfang an einen guten besorgen Die Silvertip Fibre Serie (Synthetik) von Mühle sind gute Wahl. -- Aftershave Nach der Rasur die Haut mit Aftershave pflegen.

Me gusto mucho el rastrillo, con sus 8.7 cm de largo total y un mango de apenas 7.5 cm. y una excelente calidad de materiales, rasura excelente, nada agresiva la rasurada pero dejando una sensación de piel de bebé, escogí el modelo Kelvin DES89KNBL, Plata Nudoso principalmente por el mango, como ya lo comprobé (a pesar de ser corto) no se resbala y se ajusta perfecto permitiendo una rasurada muy segura. Y también por el precio ya que solo costo $542 pesos mx el 16 de abril del 2021. Lo recomiendo ampliamente para principiantes ya que es casi imposible cortarse y también para los que nos rasuramos casi diario ya que no irrita la piel. Además incluye 5 hojas de afeitar. En cuanto al servicio de Amazon excelente ya que incluía gratis el envío internacional (a México) llegó 2 dias antes y en perfectas condiciones (el sobre se notaba que lo habían abierto pero es comprensible ya que pasa aduana y lo tienen que revisar), encantado con mi inversión.
