It was however completely the right choice and I found it preferable to wood or plastic for the following reasons. The box is very sturdy and when erected has three layers of thick cardboad on the base which provides the puppies with insulation from the cold floor. The top layer has a water proof coating applied aswell. I placed a folded fleece blanket on the base and then put a 3ft square vet bed over the top. This provides some cushioning if Mum accidentaly lays on one of her babies (although I am always nearby to intervene if necessary). If a puppy lays against the side of the box, the sides do not strike cold or hard (like plastic or wood) but are warm and slightly flexible if a puppy lays against them, which mine frequently do. This box is 36" x 36" and is the perfect size for my cocker spaniel to lay stretched out with her nine puppies. I am so pleased I chose this box, as it is perfect. ( long story) so we wasn’t prepared, I came on here& found this whelping box for a very affordable price, didn’t think it was true & when it came I was amazed at how strong the cardboard is&how strong the rails are. I went with a 48X48 & it’s the perfect size for my Staffie X bullmastiff & her six puppies. We didn’t use the rails as we didn’t need to. We had to cut down the sides for my dog but they are back up now and it still looks perfect& is still very strong. We put the front flap up when they are playing & that can be easily done with some tape, I highly highly recommend this whelping box. She is having 6 pups.** A: My Jack Russell is 9 inches tall, weighs 5kg & had four pups. There was loads of room, in fact they all looked a bit lost in there! **Q: Is this suitable for a staffordshire bull terrier** A: I have Scottish terriers. This was suitable for the whelping and the first 3-4 weeks thereafter. There was sufficient space for my bitch and her pups. I bought the 30" size but you may need the next size up. Staffs and Scotties are both terriers and known lovingly as 'sods'. The whelping boxes were fine - the cardboard is substantial. The only reason you need to move out is because the little darlings piddle and poo and after 3-4 weeks they become a little more adventurous and want to explore - then you can move into a pen. Good luck. **Q: How do the pig bars stay in place?** A: There are screws with the box - you screw from the outside of the box into the bars. I used to breed Scottish Terriers and the pups outgrew the bars - i.e. they would get stuck behind them - once their eyes opened and they became adventurous. I found the box to be serviceable up to 3-4 weeks by which time they went into the crate! Do I recommend the? Most certainly as there is no chance of infection from any previous litter.
