## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are they cleanable?**
A: No, the way they are designed, the moisture from the hens falls through the shavings and is absorbed by a brown paper backing.  The solid waste fall through the shaving too.  You can shake the mat to clean out the solids but eventually you will want to replace the nesting pad.  I replace my nesting pads about every 16 weeks more or less depending on my birds.  I have 24 hens which use 7 nests, but as you know, hens are particular about which nest is the favorite. So that nest pad get replaced as often as 8 weeks.  For me, the convenience is worth the cost.

**Q: what are these pads actually made of?  can they be composted?**
A: They are excelsior with a brown paper backing. I don't compost mine because the excelsior never seems to break down.

**Q: Do the birds eat them?  Has anyone had problems with birds that do eat them?**
A: My birds scratch them up quite a bit,  but I've not seen any indication that they are eating them. They seem to like using them, as they almost never lay outside the boxes.

**Q: Are these able to be composted?**
A: The backing has some qualities that hold the moisture and not sure they would break down properly. I would not compost these. Put them in your burn pit.

I realy realy like these alot.They feel naturalNot to thick and not to thin.It does pull apart easily if your being rough and in a hurry. If you take your time to separate and lay in nesting boxs there good.Also I love that you can kinda mold them to how you want them in your boxs.They have no odorEasily to cleanMy hens love them.Great for the priceGets the job done

I was dubious when this arrived yesterday, but after seeing how my "girls" responded to it, I can give this five stars. The bulk package actually breaks down into several layers with each separated by a piece of heavy paper that is glued to the material and they are about one inch thick. The material kind of reminds me of the material for swamp cooker pads and it moulds easily into the shape of the laying boxes. My girls made it their own and it became a semi-bowl they set on. No dented or broken eggs so 100% success on the eggs surviving. I highly recommend you give this product a try.

Others said that their chickens would not use it and that they scraped it up to pieces. My chickens did some with scrape up these pads but it didn’t affect how they worked. They absolutely love the pads and I love them because I no longer come out to broken eggs! I have one chicken who, no matter how much calcium I add to her diet continuously lays thin-shelled eggs, and she also insists on scratching away all of the wood shavings, so I would always come out to find her eggs crushed in on one side. Therefore, this was a great solution! Not only that but they are very easy to clean. So far I’ve been replacing them once a month, but this is during the winter when the ground is pretty muddy, So I expect in the summer they will last longer. It’s easy to simply dump any droppings out by turning the pad upside down and giving it a good shake. They fit perfectly in my coop (10”x12” nesting boxes).
