Some caution required.
I’ve been using these for at least 20 years with my Archtop Guitars. Do they work ? That’s hard to know as I’m very careful with my instruments, at least whilst we were living in Southern California, where temperature and humidity inside a house were easily controlled. But now we live in the UK and it’s not so easy. I brought 7 guitars with me. One is developing varnish cracking, a Wineburst Citation, (photo before cracking), but it’s a favorite, not always in its case, and on two others the binding is detaching from their pick guards. I have a de-humidifier arriving today so perhaps at least in one room I can drop the humidity from the 70’s and sometimes low 80’s to around 50%. So i’m in the middle of a battle with this UK weather hoping these Boveda Packs are as good as they say in this first real test of their properties… When we lived In the States, a Boveda Pack touching a Citation tuner tarnished the gold down to the base metal. Another pack, resting above the headstock tarnished the tuners on a Super V Prototype, though fortunately most of this was removed by using a jewelers cloth. Occasionally a pack exhibits wet patches. But I will continue using them, we are talking about a period of 20 years, though unfortunately on collectable instruments affecting parts very difficult if not impossible to replace. So my message is, after learning the hard way, be careful about placement. Stay away from contact with metallic parts and open the case at least monthly to verify all is well. I also drop a pack inside my Archtops, but before doing so make sure you have a way to get it out. (This was written before Boveda offered pouches, maybe they are sufficient to protect the guitar from any of the above ). So far no internal electronics have been affected by placing packs inside the guitar and that’s with over 20 years of use. But if you have a collection of guitars and you rotate them out a case pack may not be enough, it’s then best to humidify and temperature control the room itself. This done properly can get very expensive especially if you use multiple rooms. … I should mention; with the varnish cracking on the Citation a well known luthier here in the UK thought Gibson had applied too much lacquer to the guitar, this thickness amplifying any deleterious humidity/temperature condition.

I have been using the Boveda 49% Humidity Packs for years in all of my acoustic and electric guitars. They are super easy to use. There is no muss, no fuss as the gel liquid is in sealed the packets. I live in the NE so with the heat on in the winter it can be very dry (low humidity) and without a/c the summers get pretty sticky (high humidity). These packs do a pretty good job regulating the humidity in the case. I use the Boveda Double holders which holds two humidity packs and put one double holder over the strings and hang it into the sound hole of my acoustics and one double holder with two packs under the headstock. The inside of the case stays between 45% and 55% which is ideal. I do the same for my electrics but I only use one double under the headstock. I found this is enough to keep the fretboard hydrated and prevent fret sprout. I find that I am getting 8-12 months of use out of the packs using them the way I do once they are opened. I buy in bulk and store the unused, unopened packets in heavy duty zip lock bags. Never had a problem doing this even if they are stored for a year.

i originally got these to prevent the neck warping on my acoustic guitars due to seasonal changes. it used to be frustrating to fool with the truss rod every 15-20 days. tried putting this in my hard case as recommended and wow - yes, the neck warping reduced by 80%. I only need to make minor tweaks to the truss rod once in 3 months. But what is even more important : I own 4 luthier built acoustic guitars and each of them sounds extra-ordinary - but only on few days of the year when the weather is ideal ! but now with these humidifiers, these guitars sing at their best every day of the year. keeping ~50% humidity in the case keeps the wood from sounding dry/raspy in summer and from sounding like it has a blocked sinus in rainy season. i think these humidifers are an excellent product to have your precious guitar sounding their best always. u also dont need to waste time on monitoring with a humidifier and add/take out few of the packs, like with other products. these seem to maintain the humidity within a decent range most of the time. yes, buying so many packs a year for 4 guitars quickly adds up to a significant amount of money. but i am not complaining too much about the price of the humidifier packs as it's a good quality, unique product. the only thing i am not happy about is the price of the pack holders. god, these things are just square pieces of cotton and they are sold for obscene prices of Rs 1,500 each ! seriously ? i need 2 of them for each hard case and that for 4 gtrs, just the fabric holder runs upto Rs 12,000. boveda should profit from selling their humidifier and not from fleecing us for tiny pieces of fabric. otherwise, i am happy with this product.
