Review: This would be a great at home practice for a struggling reader. I am elementary teacher and parents are always asking what they can do to help students become more fluent readers. One thing I always say is to have students read, read, read! This will be a new "go to" suggestion - engaging text, simple procedures for practicing and building fluency... and comprehension application.
Review: Some general thoughts on the book after sitting with it for a while - framed by my work as a Special Education teacher in Title 1 Los Angeles, and having earned an MEd SPED, an MEd ID, and a PhD Education: • The questions don't flow well. They also seem rather trivial - random items selected - rather than a purposeful selection of ideas to reinforce comprehension of the main idea of each piece of selected text. • With that in mind, there should be a solid learning goal for each piece. Students will learn X, or students will learn how to X ... or ... student facing: after engaging with the text, I will be able to ... • The person(s) writing the question pool should not be the person(s) who write the overall text. In this way, there's no bleed over of inference. What may make sense to them sometimes made no sense to me in terms of what the questions were trying to discover. As in the first point, the questions seemed rather random bits of trivia and not formative assessments of comprehension of a grade-level text. • The treatment of the Rev. Dr. King seemed so shallow for someone so revered by a large segment of the western world. The attempt at paralleling his and JFK's life fell flat for me - especially given the government's role in harassing King and attempting to thwart his work for justice and peace. That section needs a visit from an instructional designer well-versed in King's life / legacy, as well as DEI/CRP. All of this being said, it's a good attempt at building fluency. The methodology is sound. Teachers / parents are advised to not let this program run on autopilot, but to be actively involved with the student as they progress through this. Use the questions to build conversations and meaning around each section. Add your own context to fill in the gaps. These gaps resulted in the lower rating. The technology / infrastructure behind the low-cost offering resulted in a higher rating. A solid 4/5.
