You can make a cheap category 5 cable carry s-video and audio. The picture quality received is as good as sent to my naked eye. If your category 5 cable is part of a home network passing through a switch or a router it will NOT work. This is not an open ethernet device. The device WILL work if you connect two category 5 cables directly.So what's the point of spending £50 on this? I suppose if i) you find yourself in a position where you need to run a long, long cable between two points ii) you have existing point to point cat 5 network cables laid in a house but no longer use it iii) you prefer for cosmetic reasons to run a single cat 5 cable rather than a s-vhs and audio cable (and you could use flat cat 5 cable too).I used it to run the s-vhs output from my Sky Plus HD box to a second TV in the kitchen. It really would have been easier to run s-video plus audio cables for this short run and not tie up parts of my home network.I wish also I had bought the component video version because I reckon you could use a scart to component video adaptor on the sky plus hd box to pick up RGB. Then the box would save a 5 cable run and probably deliver an HD picture. The balance of advantage would tip.So, in short, read the spec carefully and do some sums on whether this is worth the outlay.
