Hopefully not China.** A: The only toasters that aren't made in China (that I know of) are Dualit (handmade in the UK) and Star Manufacturing. But, you're going to pay over $250 for them. **Q: Does this make the toast hot enough to melt butter or margarine?** A: I do not know. I sent toaster back as the coils did not get hot enough to toast the bread. It could have been just one defected toaster. **Q: Does it beep or make any kind of sound when it's done toasting?** A: I don't think so - I like my toast light, so I always push the 'cancel' button. Wait!! I did leave my toast in and it didn't beep. **Q: What about the cord storage? is it underneath? Retractable? Convenient?** A: The cord is not retractable; it is underneath the toaster.
