Does this gate open in both directions?

Yes the gate opens in both directions so you can decide which side it opens on depending on where the gate is placed.

Does this gate have a variable width, the description implies that is does but one of the answers implies that it does not. My gap is 88cm.

My gate had a extra bit which I slotted in to fit the gap I'm using it for, and it was plenty big enough,the gap it's in measures 92 cm.

How wide is the gap when the gate is open?

The gap is wide enough for adults to get through when open.Bought for when grandson stays so only used once

We have a small puppy - what is the width of the gaps between the bars please?

The widest is 6.5 cm we put a mesh on ours with cable ties when puppy was very small. Great stairgate very easy to operate.
