It has 21 slots with 6 medium sized slots in the middle that are large enough to hold a full sized chef knife. I have several chef knives so this is perfect. Lots of other blocks that are designed for an actual knife set only have one chef knife slot. I've accumulated different knives over the years so this is a perfect solution and gets the knives out of the drawer, which feels a little dangerous every time I'm looking for a knife. I was searching for something that looks great on my counter and provided some much needed organization. I'm very pleased with the construction. I've seen some other blocks that have crooked slots or big knots on the surface but this is very well made. The block is solid wood with really nice high-end looking acacia on the outside, about 1/4 inch thick. Some other wood is used for the interior, which I'm guessing is how they keep the price lower than most of the other blocks on the web. Unless you turn the block upside down, you can't see that it's not solid acacia. It's pretty heavy and has 4 rubber feet on the botton, which keeps it from sliding around and stays stable. That was a big nuisance with my last block.
