This movie plunges its audience into the depths of cosmic horror and scientific curiosity. Directed by Stuart Gordon and released in 1986, this is a cult classic adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story of the same name, exploring themes of obsession, the fragility of sanity, and the terrifying unknown lurking just beyond human perception.

For a movie released in 1985, the special effects are as good as any horror fan could want.  The ‘Resonator” allows for beings to be seen.  They are always around but one cannot see them, and they cannot see you.  But with the machine, all is seen.  And it stimulates a person in erotic manners.  Crampton’s role is of a psychiatrist brought in to assess the mental state of Tillinghast a colleague of the inventor, Dr. Pretorious.  Things went bad during a test, and Pretorious was found with a missing head, with Tillinghast the suspect.  To find out what happened, Crampton (Dr. McMichaels) decides the Resonator must be re-activated.  But its action got her very ‘excited’ and she was determined that she could control it.  And Ken Foree (Officer Bubba) plays some comic relief.  It becomes a wild ride.  Meanwhile Crampton shows every possible way one can rationalize a bad situation.  And every horror fan knows that is a bad idea.
