Just adjust the cylinder blade up away from the bottom blade, slide the sharpener onto the bottom blade and slowly re-adjust the cylinder until it contacts the sharpener. Taking time to lightly skim the surface of the cylinder gave a much sharper edge to the cylinder blade and a greatly improved cut. I am grateful for the previous reviews, the holding screws are pretty flimsy so I would recommend tightening them with care. (That said, they don't need to be tightened hard, the profile of the tool has a ridge underneath which seats against the bottom fixed blade and the rotation of the cylinder against the abrasive then holds the tool firmly in place.) The abrasive strips are self adhesive. Once stuck to the tool only a narrow strip comes into contact with the cylinder and is worn down. I was able to easily peel off the abrasive and reapply it to the tool before reusing it, but I would suggest you remember to do this before storing it and the adhesive fully hardens.
