Does it have a mosquitto net?

There is a thin mesh lining on the inner door which not only provide ventilation but I guess would also act as a mosquito/insect barrier.

Is the fine mesh effective against midges?

I've not camped in a midge environment so can't help. However, no insects have bothered me so mesh seems effective.

Dose this tent need the pegs to hold it up or could it be freestanding?

In theory, you could have it freestanding but there would be some slack. It's important to know that the tent itself and the flysheet are 2 separate items. The tent itself would be able to stand on its own thanks to the fiberglass poles. The flysheet can be fastened to the poles but it doesn't make it tight at all. It doesn't get tight before you peg it down. Having the flysheet loose/slack might affect the air circulation i guess. If you look at the video on youtube on this link, you can see in detail at the tent is set up so you get a better idea. It’s about 3 or 4 inches wide, just at the top part of the door, that can be zipped closed or left open. ( I tend to leave it open a bit so I can see when it’s morning!)
