Season four of Bones finds the show in particularly rich form. Brennan and Booth have a variety of different cases to tackle, as you’d expect, backed up with exposition about earlier events and many interesting new developments. It’d be remiss to spoil them here, but Bones, to its credit, manages to be as fresh and as interesting as when it first arrived. What helps gives the show a distinction is its marriage of genres. At its heart, it’s a hard-nailed crime show, but it effortlessly weaves in comedy, romance and some very impressive twists, with an undercurrent of unpredictability that serves it well. The writers clearly had their thinking caps on for season four, too, and while there are one or two lulls, they’re easily compensated for by some very impressive episodes. The relationship between Brennan and Booth clearly sits at the core of the show, and even that--appreciating that television has taken us down similar roads in the past--is interesting to watch, and well realised. Bones might, at first glance, be easy to dismiss as just another crime show. But there’s genuinely impressive work going on here, and some very smart writing. The episodes are varied and interesting as always and there are some that stand out from the rest as being pure brilliance, one of the old villains makes a re-appearance and some lose ends are tied up nicely. The series for me can be summed up as a character study of sorts, not so much focus is put on an undlerlying story as in other series but that doesn't take anything away from this one, the characters instead get a lot more detailed and as a result a warm richness shines through the series which gets brighter and brighter all the way to the end.The story between Boothe and Bones intensifies dramatically and the link with sweets brings him into his own nicely. their relationship begins to fire up toward the end of the season and the surprise ending leaves you gasping for more! One other really nice touch is that there are more than one interns looking for Zacks job and this gives you a chance to see 5 other really diverse characters that add loads to the comedy and also make the rest of the team stand out in the process as veterans of the show.My only two criticisms are that the episodes can blend into one another about half way through the season towards three-quaters through, as there is no underlying story apart from the character development, and the lack of story with Zack after you realise one frankly brutal fact about him in the last series. You still get the feel of progression but at a very leisurely pace, this only picks up in the last 3 or so episodes, then it gets amzingly great again.Overall this is great viewing and the last 2 episodes are extemely memorable and some of the greatest Drama this show has produced. not to mention the effects which can sometimes leave you wondering how people making this show can still have an apetite!
