Product Description A much-loved best seller: sublime, soaring, reverential, uplifting, intensely emotional music in the Western sacred tradition. This simply must be experienced to be appreciated! CD Review called it 'A landmark recording in the New Age genre.' Digital orchestra, piano, 1,000-voice virtual choir, electronic special effects by Michael Stearns. desertcart.co.uk Novus Magnificat, a gorgeously other-world opus from classically trained pianist Constance Demby has become a true classic in New Age music, appealing to a wide variety of listeners, many of whom are ordinarily put off by the genre. Rooted in worship music of Western tradition, Demby's majestic improvisational vision produces what the 1986 disc liner calls "Contemporary classical Spacemusic: A Magnificat and Exaltate". Incorporating the central voice of synthesizer with a string and horn section, piano, organ, bells, and tympani, a choral voice joins with instrumental passages, setting a blissfully reverent tone throughout this two-part melodious marvel. Master composers Bach and Vivaldi come to mind in hearing the keyed chord progressions and swirling strings respectively, making Novus Magnificat a keenly majestic score for use during massage, labour and birth, meditation, worship, or relaxation. --Paige La Grone P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); About the Artist An irrepressible personality with an infectious joie de vivre, Constance Demby is also a sincere spiritual seeker. A fifth generation Californian born in Oakland, Demby began classical piano studies at the age of eight. At twelve she moved to Connecticut where her artistic studies also included painting and sculpture. Throughout the 70s, she gave concerts, workshops and visual/musical presentations all over the eastern seaboard. During this period, she began to develop new forms of contemplative classical music. By the end of the decade, she had established her own label and released her first albums of meditative and sacred spacemusic (Skies Above Skies and Sunborne). Demby's music blossomed when she returned permanently to northern California in 1980 and began experimenting with electronic instruments. Two years later, she released Sacred Space Music Vol. 1, an enduring album featuring hammered dulcimer, acoustic piano and synthesizer (re-released in 1988, HS11010). Soon after the arrival of digital sampling keyboards, Demby integrated symphonic instrumental sounds into her music and began recording in her own 16-track studio. There she produced Novus Magnificat (1986, HS11003). Her 1989 release Set Free (HS11016) added rhythms and influences from Bali and Africa to her contemporary classical base and was hailed as a 'first-rate release by an artist in her prime.' Several international tours followed, to Europe, South America, the Canary Islands, Japan, Indonesia and beyond. With the help of Jim Miller of Stratus Sounds, Demby updated her entire studio in the early 90s, replacing many of her early synthesizers with an impressive array of the latest electronic instruments and recording technology. Literally magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a wonderful achievement. Constance Demby has managed to produce the most definitive space music imaginable. The music flows beautifully and considering she didn't write the music prior to the recording makes this album truly amazing. It's one of those delightfully rare albums you can get into straight away. I urge you to buy this. Enough said.

Magnificence at 22:20
At about 22:20 into this album from Constance Demby there emerges a melody for the ages. A beautifully moving and transcendent theme that elevates this excellent album to the best of its kind in the so-called "space music" genre. This is not New Age fluff but a genuine triumph of electronic music composition.

Glorious, Majestic, Heavenly
Is 'Novus Magnificat: Through the Stargate' by Constance Demby the most heavenly piece of Space Music ever? I think it is. From the first time I heard this piece of music, I have been awestruck by the sheer magnificence of Demby's composition. You literally feel as though you're approaching the gate's of heaven and then, the gates open and you walk through to the most astounding music - soaring choirs and effects melodiously accompany your journey - and the whole experience leaves you lost for words. And that's just Part One. I have other albums of Demby's and I have explored recommended Space Music albums of other artists such as Kevin Braheny's 'Galaxies', but none of them can match the majesty and glory of 'Novus Magnificat'. Largely improvised at the time of recording, Part One builds in waves, you feel the whole Sonic Space Bass* burst through your chest and the crescendo that eventually explodes, can reduce a grown man to tears time and again. Listen through the headphones and close your eyes - it's an awesome experience. Part Two is part Vivaldi / part Bach but all Demby; an incredible achievement considering this album is 22 years old now and has never been bettered. *The Sonic Space Bass is an instrument unique to Demby - a 10 foot wide sheet of polished stainless steel with attached metal rods, harmonically tuned to a span of 5 octaves. She happened upon this when she was a Sculptor; she was using a piece of sheet metal and as it warped and wobbled she was taken by the wonderful sounds it made! She plays the bespoke beast of an instrument with 2 Cello bows. Listen in awe.

This music is hard to categorize. Most people would call it New Age, I guess, but it surpasses any limitations inherent in that genre. Moving, emotional, powerful, it draws on overwhelming, talented musicians and vocalists whose voices take flight to evoke images of the vastness and beauty of the cosmos. The range and variety of instruments are endless. They blend and then separate, then blend again, as if searching for the maximum effect. I find it has the most impact in good headphones, when it becomes both larger than life and more intimate. The tiny nuances then wash over and through you, leaving you wanting more. When headphone listening is not practical, let it test your sound system at high volume. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

I heard a couple of tracks on Musical Starstreams, many years ago. I had been trying to find out who did them ever since. And then one day I heard something which was obviously done by the same artist, on Pandora. It was Constance Demby. Armed with that information, I came here to Amazon.com, to investigate. There were two different tracks I was looking for, but I didn't know which CD either of them was from. And there were many Constance Demby CDs to choose from. So I bought two different CDs in hope of finding both tracks, and I got lucky! But I think I would have fallen in love with any of her CDs. Her music is truly celestial. She is sort of the Mother of New Age. But this is not elevator music. This is the real thing. Sit down, close your eyes, and let her lift you off your feet. This "Novus Magnificat" CD is indeed magnificent. It's a single work, separated into part 1 and part 2 due to the old tecnology where you had to flip the album. So put this on and sit back comfortably. You won't want to move for about 55 minutes.
