Am i Correct you don't need your mobile phone to use this?

You don't need your phone to fly the drone. You will need to buy a micro SD card to install in the drone. If you install the app on your phone, you can download the videos/pictures to your phone instead of taking the micro SD card out of the drone each time.

Does the dji mini 3 ( dji rc ) kit need a smart phone to opperate it ?

The two products that have the DJI RC remote have a built in monitor with the remote controllers whereas the other products don't. The monitor is nice and clear so viewing quality is good and the remote control is responsive so the drone flies smoothly and is easy to control. With the DJI RC the app used to fly and monitor the drone is built in and is therefore much superior to the remote that one needs to add an app to a Smart Phone as there would be nothing worse than a phone call coming in during a flight.
