One of the most memorable romantic films ever and winner* of two Academy Awards®, Sam (Patrick Swayze), living as a ghost, discovers his death wasn’t just a random robbery gone bad. To help him reconnect with the love of his life, Molly (Demi Moore), and solve his own murder, he enlists the talents of a sceptical psychic (Oscar®-winner Whoopi Goldberg), who doesn’t even believe her own abilities. Ghost is a supernatural mystery-thriller that will cross over into your heart and never leave. *Winner: Best Supporting Actress (Whoopi Goldberg); Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, 1990. Special Features Review: A tear jerker of a movie now in stunning 4K - It is a 1990 American supernatural romance film directed by Jerry Zucker from a screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin, starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn, Vincent Schiavelli, and Rick Aviles. It focuses on Sam Wheat (Swayze), a murdered banker, whose ghost sets out to save his girlfriend, Molly Jensen (Moore), from the person who killed him – through the help of the psychic Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg). Ghost was theatrically released on July 13, 1990, to commercial success, grossing $505 million against a budget of $22–23 million and emerging as the highest-grossing film of 1990 and at the time of its release, was the third-highest-grossing film of all time. The film was a sleeper hit, unexpectedly outperforming several blockbuster action films released that summer. Its success extended to the home video market, and it was the most rented film of 1991 in the United States. The film initially received mixed reviews from critics, with praise going towards the score and performances of the cast. Ghost earned five nominations at the 63rd Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, winning Best Supporting Actress for Goldberg and Best Original Screenplay for Rubin. Ghost was the first film Jerry Zucker directed on his own, as well as his first dramatic film. He had previously been part of the Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker directing team, known for their parody films. Zucker stated that his decision to direct Ghost was not made to distance himself from comedies or to mark a new chapter in his career, but he was merely "just looking for a good film to direct." When screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin learned that Zucker was to direct the film and wanted to make changes to his script, he was apprehensive, as he wanted Miloš Forman or Stanley Kubrick to direct and feared Zucker would turn his script into a comedy. However, Rubin changed his mind and warmed up after dining with Zucker and being impressed by how "deeply philosophical" he was.[5] Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Paul Hogan, Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Kline, Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise were considered for the role of Sam Wheat. Bruce Willis turned the role of Sam Wheat down as he did not understand the script and later called himself a "knucklehead" for declining. Similarly, Fox thought the film wouldn't work, and, in hindsight, regretted turning the role down. Michelle Pfeiffer, Molly Ringwald, Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman were considered for the role of Molly Jensen. Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, and Oprah Winfrey were either considered or auditioned for the role of Oda Mae Brown. Zucker initially was not interested in casting Whoopi Goldberg as Oda Mae, and Swayze advocated for her to be cast. Zucker credited arguments from radio host Dennis Prager with deciding to "lighten" Rubin's original script with a moral message. Rubin noted that he "wanted to tell a ghost story from the ghost's perspective": "One day, I was watching a production of Hamlet, which begins with the ghost of Hamlet's father saying, ‘Revenge my death,’" he recalled. "I thought, ‘Wow, let's transpose that into the 20th century; it'd be an interesting story.’ And the idea hit me." Filming for Ghost began shooting in July 1989. Many of the interior scenes were shot at Paramount in Los Angeles. The interior of Sam and Molly's loft is a reproduction of the home and studio of artist Michele Oka Doner, built from plans she provided because she declined to allow filming in her loft. It was reconstructed in an unused loft nearby in her Soho neighbourhood and featured many of the same details as the actual loft, such as radiators around columns, open stairs and a house-shaped enclosure for the refrigerator. Filming of the apartment took place at 102 Prince Street, lower Manhattan. The exterior scenes were shot in New York City, particularly in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Soho, and Wall Street, for about five weeks. The film features about 100 special effects shots. Demi Moore's famous 'boy cut' in the movie was designed by Manhattan hair stylist John Sahag. The final scene used digital video effects. Originally it was meant to show Patrick Swayze kissing Demi Moore before walking up a mylar platform toward a bluescreen with grips in the shot. VFX supervisor Richard Edlund didn't think the audience would buy it and used Quantel’s “Harry” video-compositing system to combine the workprint with Swayze with elements that had been shot on an Oxberry animation stand and things like an endoscope of Christmas tinsel A masterpiece from the 90s movie era, which was a perfect date movie with a fully thought-out script and a director known for comedy and not drama. Review: Love can sometimes live beyond all boundaries... - At least, that's what 'Ghost' is trying to tell us. If love is strong enough, it can exist even after death, even when all seems lost. Of-course, there's no real reassurance anything exists after death, including love, but since people need desperately to believe there is still something out there left of their soul after the body fails to continue its journey upon earth, it's understandable why this movie suggests that some souls might still wander among us as ghosts - especially when their end wasn't exactly expected. Either way, whether you chose to believe or not, this is simply terrific entertainment, and one that can no doubt be considered a classic these days. I don't know why I didn't get to watch 'Ghost' earlier, but as they say, it's better late than never. For the few of those who haven't seen it yet (mainly the younger generation, I assume) I'll just say there is a big chance this is the best Demi Moore\Patrick Swayze movie you'll get to see, and I'm still waiting for something else to surpass the hypnotizing tension and mystery atmosphere offered here, the fact Patrick Swayze's immense suffering feels so real even though in his new form he's not suppose to suffer any more; Also, you'll get to see Whoopi Goldberg in one of her best roles up until now, and personally I feel that here she even exceeds expectations and is better than what she did with her most famous role as Dolores Van-Cartièr\Sister Mary Clarence just a couple of years later (but, if you'll watch closely, I quite sure you'll notice that her celebrated movies about nuns took their inspiration from an interesting scene here). I must mention the guy that plays Carl (don't remember the actor's name at the moment, but he's simply great). He's doing a fine job as the best friend of Swayze's character who betrays his faith and stubs him in the back (well, something quite close to it, anyway). I felt a bit sorry for him at his loss at first, but as the story developed and the truth was exposed in all its ugliness I hated him with a reason. Beside those wonderful actors, notice the one who briefly plays the subway ghost. A more tortured soul, so filled with agony and despair even after death, I haven't witnessed in a very long time, or should I say I never witnessed in my life... To conclude things, you really should not miss this movie, by all means take your time to get to know what the power of true love that lasts beyond the limits of life is, and by the way, if you like this one, make sure as well to listen to the original cast recording of the musical based on the same story - made years later, and through the music you'll relive the sorrow and deep emotions of all the people involved in the story of 'Ghost', a story that seems as fresh and honest (albeit not exactly real in places) as it seemed back then in 1990, when the wonderful feature first reached the big screens and captured the hearts and imagination of millions around the globe. Not just your average ghost story.

A good, but not great movie
* Synopsis A young couple ( Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore), Sam and Molly, are setting up a home in New York. He works as a senior employee in a bank and deals with many expensive, premium accounts. While working on a terminal, Sam notices a financial irregularity in one of the major accounts. When returning from home with his intended, he is murdered. But his spirit is still left behind and he sees his dead self in Molly's arms. Sam is still able to linger with his intended. By accident, he encounters a scam spiritualist (Whoopi Goldberg), Oda Mae Brown. But she turns up and she can hear and speak with him. At this time, the killer of Sam entered the home of now-single Molly. Encouraged by this he eventually gets Oda to inform his Molly she is in danger. The plot gets worse. As his friend (Tony Goldwyn), Carl Bruner, orchestrates his killing by this man. This was to cover the irregularities in the big accounts. The future of Sam and Molly is in the hands of what Oda can do to sort this out. What happens next? * Commentary The film is easy to watch. This film (1990) was made for around $20,000,000 but made over $500,000,000 at the box office as well as video rentals. This is one of the greatest ratios of cost to make as box office sales. The big chemistry between Whoopi and Patrick's characters is the major engine that keeps the story afloat. Oda is helpful in supporting each other, and their comic timing is great together. This movie is more enjoyable the more I watch it. It's a feel-good movie. Patrick was getting flak from some people at the time, as he was a dancer, which went against the male stereotypes of characters. He then learned martial arts, which was helped by his dancing training. Some still complained that it was plain to see he's a brown belt. Saying his fighting, such as in Road House, he lacked choreographic insight, so he was getting flak from some people at the time, as he was a dancer, which wasn't a win with some! And after Ghost, he did such Point Break.

Great movie, all time classic
Great movie. All time classic. Great acting. Shows how light and dark interact and how some people walk in one, some in another. Obviously dramatised for the movie.
