I personally paired an iPad Pro 9.7" with a MacBook Air. I used a piece of software on both the iPad and the Mac called 'Duet' to be able to extend my Mac's desktop to the iPad. It's a little fiddly at first, but once you get it sorted it remembers your settings. The clip itself is fairly sturdy and comes with an array different fittings for different iPads/iPhones and MacBooks, so if you own almost any combination of these products there's a good chance this will fit. The part of the clip which extends down is used to prevent your attached device from swinging to one side, or hanging off the side of your screen so that's not an issue. That being said, I did find that the weight of my iPad would push the MacBook's screen backwards unless it was angled just so when the iPad was attached.
