The usual trick is to try to run the drill bit around the edges of the hole to make it bigger. Problem is, it's hard to keep the hole symmetrical. This little set from Jelbo just might be the answer to the problem. They are cone shaped drill bits which can be used on wood or metal. You can drill a hole up to 32mm in diameter. They're quick and easy to use with perfect results every time. A little tip when using these. Work out the size hole you're looking for, let's say 22mm. Choose the cone most suitable for that size, in this case the largest one. Now wrap a little bit of tape just above the 22mm marking. Now when you drill you just keep going until you reach the tape marker. Makes it so much easier to do, as you can't see the marking when the bit is rotating. These cone bits are sharp and goes through wood like it's made of butter. Haven't tried it yet on any metals but I should imagine it would be just as easy. With the titanium coating these cones should stay sharp for a long time unless you have thousands of holes to drill. I paid just under £8 for the set of three which is excellent value. Review: For the money, these are perfectly acceptable. - I needed to drill a 16mm hole in a thin steel van bulkhead and didn't want to make a mess of it using a conventional brill bit. I drilled a 4mm pilot hole with a standard bit then used one of these to enlarge it. It left a small burr on the cab side which I couldn't get to with the drill but two minutes with a curved file dealt with that. And wasn't sure if it would take a week or two, or a month or two, like some amazon orders.
