The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester brothers continues into the sixth season. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) spent their lives on the road, battling every kind of supernatural threat. And over the years, after dozens of bloody adventures, they finally closed in on their dark destiny. Sam and Dean learned they were to be important and prophesied participants in the Apocalypse. Together, with the help of their friends -- father-figure Bobby and fallen angel Castiel -- they managed to avert the End and defeat Destiny itself. But at a terrible cost. For Sam sacrificed himself ... imprisoned in the same fiery pit that caged Lucifer. And Dean, heartbroken and alone, was forced to pick up the pieces of his life. A year later, his past inevitably catches up to him -- in the form of Sam... mysteriously freed from his cage in hell. And Sam needs his brother to rejoin the fight -- because a new threat is rising in the dark corners and backwoods of America. Special Features Review: Supernatural Noir - Creator of Supernatural Eric Kripke originally had a five year story in mind when Supernatural first started and after he finished telling his tale he decided it was time to step down as showrunner and hand the reigns to Sera Gamble..so how did she do? I do belive that people who watch season 6 again will really begin to appreciate how this story was told...it's nice to have a show which treats it's viewers as smart people. This season has some truely amazing episodes such as Weekend at Bobby's, which was directed by Jensen Ackles and revoles around Bobby and not the boys, Live Free or Twihard which has a good mix of humour and drama and Dean has a truely bad ass scence at the end..other highlights include Clap Your Hands if You Believe, Like a Virgin, Unforgiven, Frontierland and the final three episodes: The Man Who Would Be King, Let IT Bleed and The Man Who Knew Too Much are amazing episodes that end of the season extraordinary well. I have missed one episode of my lst and that is The French Mistake...this is an episode that may not be to your taste but I think it is one of the funniest episodes of Supernatural ever and maybe even one of the funniest episodes of any show. Supernatural is a show that likes to poke fun at itself and other shows and never is this more true then here...I don't want to go into too much detail because if you haven't seen it it's better to go in blind....just know that you will be laughing for 42 mins. What as also great about this season was the fact that it took characters to places we have not seen them before such as the retired hunter Dean, the 'new' Sam, and the desperate Cas....it makes gripping viewing and it's nice to know these characters still have new places to go. Also, the Angel Balthaza is a great addition to the cast bring humour to every scene much like Crowley is able to do. However, there were a couple of misteps such as the Campbell family never really felt fleshed out and it seemed as if the writers didn't really know what to do with them...also, the actress who played Eve just wasn't creepy enough to pull off her character and that is most liekly which she is replaced by Samantha Smith (Mary Winchester) for the majority of the episode Mommy Dearest. Despite these misteps I still think that this was an excellent season of Supernatural, it was never going to be easy to start a new story after 5 years, but I thinkt hat they have managed the task well and I personally love the story telling of season six. Also, the ending of the season finale has meant I can't wait for season 7 to see how it all turns out! Review: Best Show ever - Just the best

They ditched the stupid slapstick - and made it GREAT
The Blu ray version of this season is excellent, with crisp sound, clean lines and a host of extras for those who are really into them I, am not into the extras, just good quality drama that grips me an makes me want to watch 'just one more episode' and this fit the bill nicely. Seasons 1-5 for me tended to be divided betwen story-arc episodes, one-off monster-hunts and those stupid inane silly slapstick ones that had no point and no real interest. The true humour of Sam Dean and the others is the sly sarcasm and one-liners. A well placed aggrieved 'DUDE' can have me howling with laughter, but the antics in last seasons sit-com scenariop just left me cold. Season 6 opens well, and each episode links in to the next as we progress through an ever changing year in the lives of our heroes. There is more blood letting than I recall was in season 5 and it seems to return to the base premise of the series, which was for hunters to hunt the hunted and fight the 'bad guys' - except the bad guys are not always Demons and Vampires, and the Good guys do not always have wings and a halo. What is the most interesting thing about this series is the shifting viewpoints - is Castiel as good as he seems, or is he mistaken in his actions? Is he ultimately good or evil? as Sam better with or without his soul? Should Dean have had the chance of a mundane boring but safe life? What deal did grandpa Samuel strike and what is the price? The theories of heaven, hell and purgatory are brought to bear with some surprising twists, and woven into the tale is Lovecraft and an assortment of other possible-noteables along the way. Interesting characters flit in and out but all of them are there for a reason. There is one weak story - the alternate reality one where Sam is a chap called Jared and he is an actor.... it falls down over itself several times and is cumbersome and slow, but it does give an insight into the behind-the-scenes machinations and manages to poke fun at cast and crew, but other than that it is the one and only pointless episode. I left the season with shock, surprise at the final twists, and anticipation for th next season. Bring it on dudes!

Naturally super
This is without a doubt Supernatural at it's best. Yes the fifth season was amazing, moving, awe inspiring and sad all at the same time, but this is the show at it's best. After the shock finale of season five closer "Swan Song" and the teasing few seconds where we see Sam is in fact not in hell, you are kept wondering at what will happen next. At first there is a return to the monster-of-the-week format similar to the first few years of the show, though with quite a twist: namely the things they hunt are "Alphas". The first of their kind. Werewolves out on half-moons, day-walking vampires other creatures that go bump in the night. All bigger and badder than ever before. Also of interest is the ominous undertones of Sam's return. He is back, but is it really him, or is Lucifer at the wheel? Why is Castiel being so evasive? And what is Crowley hiding? From the opening episode "Exile on Main Street" the stories are interesting and obviously leading somewhere that is intricate enough to keep you guessing but not as confusing as the last two years worth of stories have been. Gone is the over-reliance on Biblical lore, destiny and fate. However the show still keeps its tongue very firmly in its cheek with references to the rising popularity of vampires in the media (Twilight), a look at other people's approaches at the out of the ordinary, (UFO's), an angel's intense hatred of a certain doomed cruise liner (Titanic) and of course themselves. The highs come suddenly and usually quite inappropriately in terms of wanting to laugh at other's misfortunes, and the lows are sometimes very saddening, but this series of the show is possibly the finest yet. From the moment you realise just how far one of the main characters has fallen and his impassioned plea to God to help or even just give a sign he cares in the episode "The Man Who Would Be King", your heart will break and then from there it is a sudden plunge to the end. Will he realise his mistake? Or will he become corrupted by his new power? It is easy to see why this often overlooked show has gone from being one of small budgets and simple ideas to one of the most popular shows to come out of America in the last decade, especially in the genre. Fantastic, epic, heartbreaking and moving, Supernatural Season Six shows also that this ship has plenty of steam left in her yet.

A new start
I think before fans of the show even start watching this season, they have to accept that it's going to be different this year. Supernatural was originally a five year vision, and those five years have been played out brilliantly. So the question is, what next? The first few episodes of this season definitely feel like a reboot; the reasons behind Sam's reappearance, as well as others, are revealed slowly, and suburban Dean is a bit irritating at first. Do any of us believe that Dean could really have become so middle of the road quite so quickly? I don't think so. But stick with it. Supernatural is one of my favourite shows of all time, and definitely one of the best shows on TV right now, and after a few slightly awkward episodes in the beginning, it starts to get its groove back. By the end we're back to a show that feels like Supernatural again, and I'm looking forward to season 7 starting very much. This season isn't quite up to the gold standard this show set itself in the first five seasons, hence only 4 stars, but if it's a choice between this or no more Sam and Dean? No contest. Watch and enjoy, the boys are still having fun doing it, and the fun's contagious.

Fantastic! Some of the best episodes yet
The new season started off with a bang. Dean rocking the white picket fence and Sam in the deepest pit of hell. But the show quickly exploded with new arch enemies, the return of Mark Sheppard as Crowley which made me ecstatic, new monsters, old friends returning, some in very odd ways, and a storyline that surpasses the devil in a few ways. I've always been a fan of Supernatural, its my favourite show of all, and when season six was closing in I did wonder, how could they top the scale of the last season. Sam and Dean fought heaven and hell, they beat Satan! And yet they did it, they brought in enemies that while not being able to match Lucifer, were a delight to watch and some will be missed. But the final enemy surpasses Lucifer in all things, can't wait to see how Dean and Sam will fight that one. The best episodes are without a doubt, Like a Virgin, Weekend at Bobby's, Frontierland, The French Mistake and Mommy Dearest. They got to fight Dragons! And Dean got an awesome new sword. Sam and Dean in western wear was epic, especially Dean wearing a zerape and everyone else calling it a blanket. Jensen Ackles did a fantastic job directing Weekend at Bobby's, a truly hilarious episode centred on Bobby, and shows us we need to see more of Jim Beaver and that Ackles needs to direct more, fortunately he is for Season 7. The French Mistake has to be the ultimate meta-episode, seeing Dean see himself on a soap opera had me laughing for ages, and the brothers on camera was a highlight of the season. And Mommy Dearest gave us the best twitter trend ever, Jefferson Starships! Because their horrible and hard to kill. Very true. The show has been on form all season and given us some of the best episodes yet. But the true star of acting this season was Jared Padalecki who has been Sam through the hard times and the good times, and this season gave him some tough challenges of acting, but he nailed them. RoboSam will never be forgotten, he must appear again! Season 7 will be here in September, and I can't wait to see what Sam and Dean get up to. And how the hell they are going to get out of the situation they were in for the season finale. Its going to be brilliant, I have no doubt of that.

AUDACIOUS & AWESOME
Season 5's climax seemed a fitting, but sad, end to a fine series. Surely no way could another follow? Oh, ye of little faith! With a flourish, along bursts Season 6 - 22 episodes crammed with excitement, horror, gore, stunning special effects - and, a particular strength, the underlying humour which occasionally becomes hilarious. Full marks to all who keep up with the hidden agendas, ever-changing alliances, little being as it seems. I simply sat back and enjoyed the ride. Audacity rules! The Apocalypse was apparently not averted but remains on the cards. Daemons still abound (some quite charismatic). Angels engage in Civil War (free will an issue). Invasion of Purgatory may yield a very rich prize. Even featured is a twenty four hour pact with Death himself (this a moving episode). Much more besides, including spectacular deaths (and reappearances). As ever, the Winchester brothers take on all comers - back from the dead Sam unfortunately minus his soul. (A 30 minute bonus discusses the concept of souls, hell, etc.) Admittedly some sequences are just plain nasty, notably when torture is involved. Usually, though, there is much to enjoy - especially when the show refuses to take itself seriously. Take Ep.15 - the brothers whisked into an alternative reality, they suddenly actors called Jared Padalecki and Jensen Eckles in something called "Supernatural" (Dean appalled to find he is wearing makeup). Here Misha Collins (Castiel) is especially funny. How about Ep.17 - angel Belthazar so hating Celine Dion's singing in the film, he unsinks the Titanic (problems resulting). Ep.18 has the brothers entertainingly whisked back to the Wild West of 1861, poking fun at the cliches and, of course, heading for a gun duel at noon. Jenson Eckles directs Ep.4. A 25 minute bonus tells how he set about it. Throughout savour the tongue-in-cheek scripts, devilish lines including "Soon I shall be ankle deep in your blood, sucking the marrow from your bones" and "We're going to serve up your young and call it veal". All are on fine form. (A special word of praise for Jim Beaver's Bobby - ever there, between swigs, to research and advise.) That ten minute gag reel is the icing on the cake. Final audacity? How about that shattering declaration at the Season's very end! In short, a treat for the fans. Absolutely great.

Still as good as ever
My least favourite season is actually season 5, the pacing was all over the place, even though there were some excellent episodes mixed up in there. Whereas season 6 has my preference of maybe not having so many extreme highs, but not so many lows either. It's a really consistent and well-paced season when you sit down and rewatch it, and there are some great episodes in here such as the Western episode or the one focused on Bobby's life. Plus soulless Sam was a really interesting idea and you find yourself kind of missing him when he's gone even, still the second half of the season has sooo many great brotherly moments and Dean grinning at having Sammy back that it really does warm your heart The specials features also sound like they are offering a little more than the past few seasons have had, I can't wait to see more on Jensen directing. My one complaint is that the cover is so ugly-looking! The photoshop is really very poor. I know this is the official US cover, but for the UK DVD's I wish they could have done what they usually do and kept the cover from part one of the season 6 split season :/ It looks so much nicer, and the artwork with them being split in half makes a lot more sense with the season (soulless Sam coming back with something missing/Dean being torn between hunting and a family life) than the random snake.
