The bread needs to be bigger than a standard loaf to achieve a good toastie. This is partly because ideally you do want the toastie to be sealed along all its edges but also because this is a deeper than usual toasted sandwich maker and the bread tends to sag lower, and doesn't remain in contact with the upper hotplate, and therefore you find that your bread isn't always toasted properly on its top surface. As this item does not have a cut off switch I always allow it to heat up thoroughly before putting in a sandwich for toasting. I usually set a timer for 6 minutes. Sandwich is nicely toasted. Food does not burn and smoke. Then I switch off the toaster. Clean the appliance while it's still hot.
