Beautiful tool

To preface, I'm by no means a professional machinist. A hobbyist at best, and newish at that. I'm more of a hobbyist fabricator. This is plenty accurate and precise for me, exceedingly so for my needs. I got a precision ground to 0.0002" piece of granite as well and tested this with it. As long as I placed the level exactly in the same position (had to mark the location), I got the same reading every time. Also spinning the level 180 it was the same every time. It could even detect when I shifted my weight a little on the floor as I was on a wooden joist floor and the tiny compression from part of my weight moving registered significantly. Very happy with it.

I have a bench top lath and it is not super accurate so i don't need a professional level at 5X the cost. Once i figure out how sensitive it was to adjust i got it set up right. For me this is an acceptable trade off of cost verses ease of use. I may use it twice a year so it works for me.

I've used plenty of cheaper tools and I know they often need to tweaking to be useful. I knew this wouldn't be as good as a Starrett since it's 1/3 of the price. But, at $56 I didn't think it would be completely useless. I thought wrong. Quality control was bad. The calibration screw had either some dried glue or plastic film stuck between it and the red cover plug. Once I got that cleaned out, the screw was misaligned with the plastic top of the tool, so I had to angle the screwdriver and be careful not to damage the screw. No way to move the plastic top. Then, I wasted probably 20 minutes trying to level this thing. You couldn't really make fine adjustments. A small move would send the bubble to the other side of the vial. Once I finally got it centered, if I picked it straight up and put it straight down, the bubble wouldn't return to the same place. $56 is a lot for a level-shaped paper weight. I guess I'm springing for the Starrett because this thing is useless. Don't waste your time or money.

Good machinist's level. I tested this level on a level surface plate and this level is spot on. However, Amazon chose to ship this precision level in a plastic bag. There is a thin-fitted paper sleeve that the box slides into. The wooden box holds the level, and the level is wrapped in oil paper. The plastic shipping bag does have a small "delicate" label, but this bag is entirely the wrong method for shipping a product such as a delicate precision instrument. The box was crushed during shipping. I will glue and repair the box rather than deal with the hassle and delays involved with returning a product to Amazon. The quality of the wooden box is acceptable. The box is made from softwood. The box is only intended to provide minimal protection of the level - which it did during shipping. The box served its purpose - to soften an impact to the level. The level came within the crushed box. Without the sacrificial wooden box, the level would most certainly have been damaged during shipping.
