Very Useful
Overall I liked this book a lot. As a lay person I found the analogy of the brain’s limbic system, frontal lobes & parietal cortex to chimp-like behaviour, rational ‘human’ behaviour and memory storage, respectively, extremely easy to grasp. This meant that I was fully ‘with him’ (for want of a better phrase) as he explored the implications of this throughout the rest of the book, much of which I found highly enlightening. On the downside… 1) I could have done without all the moons, suns & planets mumbo-jumbo. It rang bells of astrology rather than the scientifically sound concept that this clearly highly qualified psychiatrist was trying to present. Just because it's being highly simplified for the non-specialist doesn't mean you have to dress it up in clap-trap to make it interesting. (I sincerely hope his publishers didn’t make him do it to make the book more 'populist' because it annoyed the hell out of me). 2) I started to lose interest towards the end, not because it was not a good book, but because he’d explained it, I’d got it all and it seemed to start repeating itself. (Mind you, I am the kind of person who always thinks that science documentaries could be presented in half the time, so you could put this second point down to me being impatient rather than the author stringing a book out.) The most memorable advice that sticks in mind a few weeks after reading it … Never make important decisions between 11 pm & 6 am (ish) when your chimp is in control. If you’ve read the Northern Lights trilogy, where the characters have daemons you’ll realise what a thinking man Philip Pullman is too.

There is a reason this book is a best seller, it deals with a very complex subject, a subject that has a major impact on the lives of everyone, and it make it something you can understand and work with. This is not an easy book, it has a lot. to say and takes some sustained effort fro you in working through it. This is not one of those change your life in five minutes books, but it can change your life. Based on long experience the author has found a way to describe neurobiological brain functions in a way you can grasp and work with. From the first chapter on you will start to understand why you and the people you know act the way you do. You will also learn what you can do to change that, and improve things. I have read a lot of books that detail brain science, explaining many of the things dealt with in this book in detailed ways, but rarely have I come across a book that makes this information available to the masses. Well here it is. Don't miss out on this opportunity

Clara y sencilla explicación del funcionamiento racional e irracional de nuestro cerebro, útil para tomar conciencia de ciertos comportamientos. También muy buena la versión infantil.
