Maxtor 1TB USB 3.0 portable hard drive

Excellent little hard drive that I use for extended storage on my PC. Access times are really fast and it's simplicity in itself to set up. If you're looking for a quick and reliable storage option then you could do far worse than this.

Had a really old portable drive that I used for about five years to back up my computers. It was a proper faff having to copy everything on my computer's drive over and over to ensure that I have copied over everything but the software that comes with this allows you to easily backup PCs as after your initial backup every subsequent one just copies over the new files or updates the files that have changed/been deleted. The product overall is of very high quality. Feels premium and works like a charm. No need to plug into the mains as this uses your computer's battery to power it. Since it has USB 3.0 you can copy a huge amount of data in a very short period of time. I was able to copy over roughly 150GB of data in about half an hour. On my previous drive this would have taken four times longer at around two hours! Would definitely recommend this product to anyone. Great for backing up and due to it's very quick read/write speed can also be used effectively as a gaming drive to run steam games from if you have limited HDD space on your PC. Overall very glad I bought this!

I own three of these hard drives. A 4TB which runs 24/7, another 4TB backing up the one which runs all day, and now this latest 2TB, which is plugged into the Xbox One. Needless to say, the 4TB backup drive has never been needed. The main drive has been running almost constantly for around 5 years, and never failed once. The drive is perfect for use with the Xbox One. It's simply plug and play and away you go. I don't suffer any penalty on speeds from downloading directly to the HDD. It's close to silent (you won't hear it running), and generates very little heat. The drive is powered by USB (no mains power) and I was able to power it directly from the TV, as well as PC. To address negative reviews, Public Service Announcement : HARD DRIVES FAIL. You should be backing up your data, or else you will always run a risk. HDDs contain moving parts, and wear and tear will eventually get to them. This applies to your built in HDD as much as it does these portable ones. However, Maxtor are as reliable as you are likely to find.

I've had one of these for more than a year now and just bought a second one – one for daily backups and one to store just my photos. They're really tiny and unobtrusive, and work on USB power alone so you don't need an extra power source. They work almost silently too – I have to check they're working by looking at the blue LED. The one I've had for a year hasn't missed a beat so far. The new one seems to be working well too. If you use it with a PC, it works straight out of the box. I use mine with a Mac though, and you have to to format it for Mac OS before using it – just 'erase' the drive in disk utility before you start – it takes about a minute. Dead easy. Then you use it like any other drive. The three-year warranty and very low price add up to make this an essential buy.

Ordered on a Friday, delivered on the Monday, thank you Amazon for being great as per usual. I bought this to use as extended storage for my PS4 Pro. I already have an internal 2TB HDD installed which is filling up fast, so this extra Maxtor M3 2 TB USB 3.0 Slimline Portable Hard Drive - Black 2TB is just future proofing to get me through until next generation consoles arrive. Couldn't believe how easy it was to get up and running: One end of the supplied ~30cm long USB cable goes into the M3 External Drive, the other goes into the front right USB slot on my PS4 Pro (the USB port on the back of the PS4 Pro is now used for charging Headphones etc). The USB port is enough to power the Maxtor M3, no additional cables or power source required. The PS4 Notifications tell me there's now and External HDD device connected and that the PS4 wants to format it. Tell the PS4 to go ahead and literally seconds later you're ready to go. I've downloaded/transferred from the original System Storage all digital apps to it like Netflix and Indie Games, the small ones take seconds, larger titles take around 5GB/min to transfer, e.g. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare takes around 10 minutes. Games that used to require their disc to be installed still require the disc to be installed, digital titles (which don't require a disc in the first place) run just as well from the External HDD as they did when installed on the Internal HDD. The Maxtor HDD itself is extremely light-weight, only a few grams, and now happily sits on it's side next to my PS4 Pro. As a super special extra bonus, the light on the Maxtor glows with a familiar PlayStation blue so it's like they were made for each other. Overall it's a perfect accessory for me - works as intended and one of the cheapest 2TB external HDD options around, so I'm delighted, hence the 5 Stars.

With all the uncertainty of whether any of us may be affected by a cyber attack, a worm, a Trojan or by any other means, backing up computer files has never been more necessary. This hard drive is an ideal device for such a process. It is easy to use straight out of the box and is powered via the USB cable from you device unlike some that require mains power. It is an ideal size, easy to use and gives that peace of mind that your files, photos etc. are safe should the unfortunate happen. You can put your programs back onto your device but if the files aren't backed up you may have lost them. Back it up on the Maxtor M3 1TB now. The price is very competitive compared to a 1TB device from a well known high street outlet who were charging £10 more. Having placed my order it arrived on the day stated. I am not on the payroll of this company and I do not know anyone employed by them. I had an issue and had to re-install everything on my laptop but not before purchasing this unobtrusive device and backing up my work first which took very little time.

Good quality

I primarily bought this drive to use as an external hard drive for my Xbox one as it has double the capacity of the Xbox's internal hard drive. The Amazon packaging was minimal (nice to see after recent press coverage) but very well protected and the product packaging was colourful and vibrant (If you like that sort of thing). The drive is very light and slimline as described for the capacity and came with the standard USB connector as expected and doesn't require the need for any other power source so its truly a plug and play device. The drive is performing perfectly as a backup drive and I have transferred about 200 gigabytes of saved games from the Xbox onto the drive in about 35 minutes. I have owned Seagate drives before and they have always served me well as they are silent and last a long time which is why I chose the Maxtor M3. If I have any problems I will update my review to let you all know what I have experienced. All in all a great priced, great performing product that I'm sure will serve me well.
