Behringer PP400 Ultra-Compact Phono Preamp for Turntables with RCA and TRS Outputs

After reading both the positive and negative reviews for this product, I was a somewhat cautious and proceeded to order with some trepidation. I had looked at much higher end phono pre-amps which all had pros and cons, especially with hum being a massive negative across the board. So I eventually bit the bullet and plumped for the PP400 as the price was low enough for me to swallow in case it didn’t live up to my expectations. As soon as the product arrived I hooked it up to my Technics SL1200MK2 and bridged it to my Denon M38 DAB, ensuring the 1200’s ground wire was connected. Upon connecting any hum immediately disappeared, I even turned the system up to full volume, tapping the plinth of the deck for some feedback or resonance, only to hear nothing! Suffice to say that my initial concerns were uncalled for and the sound quality was amazing. The line conversion is only a couple of decibels quieter than the CD output on my device, which I’m fine with. Bass and treble is extremely adequate and more than competes with both CD and USB sound sources. Some have said that this device lacks certain dynamics when compared to products 3-4 times more expensive, but my ears say that the PP400 sounds just fine! Of course my opinion is subjective, but I’m sure most will find this a perfectly good product. Only the purist audiophiles will find fault with this because they are listening to their hardware and not the music. Over all I am more than pleased with the PP400 and feel no desire to upgrade it to a more expensive pre amp as I know this does the job extremely well.

Wow, this works better than expected. I got this to try different setups here. I do have a Behringer UFO202 to adapt my turntable for AirPlay to my HomePods, which does an ok job. However, adding the separate phono amp has made a noticeable improvement, and it sounds much clearer and louder than the built-in amp. There are other options out there, but I’ve come to like and trust the Behringer gear. They give good performance at sensible prices.

This works better than expected. If you need more volume from your PC / Tablet this will give you plenty of power. It might be worth getting a similar product with an attenuator [volume control]?

I work from home and recently decided that I would like some music in my home office. So I decided to set up an old LINN Classik Movie and some Jamo speakers that I had lying around. Listening to internet radio and my iTunes via my computer was great. But something was missing. I was in the attic at the weekend and spotted my old record player and a stack of LPs. So I brought them down to play. And then I realised. The Original LINN Classik Movie has no phono stage. So that was that. No LP's in my office for me. But then I had a quick look on Amazon on Tuesday night. Saw this. Liked the reviews, Liked the price even more, So I ordered it. It arrived today. Two minutes to connect it up and Bob was indeed my uncle. And there it was. Analogue music. Magical. The look on my children's faces when I played them an LP and saw the look of wonder on their faces when I told them it was older than their Dad was worth the money alone. If you need a phono stage just buy one. If you want to spend more than this one costs then do so. But there really is no need. This one does the job admirably.

This is a great product and excellent value for money. I recently changed my turntable from one that had a built in preamp to a vintage model that did not. I was a little sceptical of this one because the price seemed low but read reviews from a variety of sources which were all very positive. So I decided to go with it. I can only agree with the positive reviews. I run my turntable through a Cambridge Audio A1 amp with Wharfdale speakers and the turntable sounds great - much better than the previous one with the built in preamp. The setup is really easy - the unit is surprisingly small and simply takes the RCA cables and ground connection from your turntable and connects with another set of RCA cables to your amplifier. It has a ground terminal and runs off its own power source I appreciate there will be better preamps on the market for those willing to pay a lot more but this is a superb item at an incredible price and definitely meets my requirements.

Was ok but i found the sound from the lps a bit tinned. Could have been the amp though? Better off with an amp with built in phono stage

wow! I never expected it to work as well as it does. Turntable to AV system via RCA worked pretty much first time. I had to fiddle with the grounding connection a couple of times but now its stable and grounding works silently. The gronding connector is a knurled thumb Screw type that was really tight but its the only and proper way to use the units ground which def exists! Sounds very good but I'm guessing if may not compare with some bigger, better and more serious pre-amps. I'm happy enough and at this price it's well worth a punt IMO. Mine is powered via a standared uk 3 pin plug

Being a bit of a music nut and having bought a Dual turntable to add to one of my hifi systems I found unsurprisingly that the amplifier [a Cambridge A1] needed a pre amplifier stage - without it the music is impossibly quiet of course. I purchased the Behringer unit and having unpacked it and hooked it up I have to say that I am very pleased with the results. A couple of tips on connection - there isn't a ground [earth] connection on the pre amp so you need to use the earth connection on your amplifier. Getting this connection right is vital to get rid of any buzzing you will get without a good connection. You have to play around a bit to make sure the spay terminal from your turntable is connected to the screw on your amp - if you don't get it just right you can still end up with a soft hum [not good in mixed company!]. The unit itself seems pretty solid and the power supply has a good long lead. the only slight gripe is that the unit has no on and off switch - I guess its not a problem as its only running on 12 volts. Overall I would really recommend this product. I bought it when it was £16 and it was good value - I see its just gone up so you need to check out the competition on price. it seems to come with a 3 year warranty if you register online which I have still to do.

The build quality is v good. I am feeding the output to edifier powered speakers. Amplification is also v good. In fact, I had ceramic cartridge, so the amplification was too much, causing clipping noise. I fixed it by making an external attenuator using 47k potentiometers. Then I got excellent results, amazing clarity. Would have been good if the manufacturer gave that simple addition. Then you can easily adjust amplification for magnetic or ceramic cartridges, making it more versatile. Grounding that brass nut is very important to keep the hum to minimum. It is tightened toi much, so I needed a pair of pliers to loosen it. Nice product overall.

The device works extremely well and it brought to life my turntable that I thought I will never use again because of these modern receivers
