is the shaft and guard for the blade metal or plastic?

Hi The larger blending head is plastic and the smallers is internally plastic with a metal outer. The potato masher is plastic.This is a product I use daily and would not hessitate to recommend you to buy it. All the part a strongley made and robust.It will easilty stand up to use in a commercial kitchen.

Seeing as no one else gave you an actual answer I decided to give it a go myself. The triblade attachment will crush ice but it sits a bit of the bottom so it will leave a few big bits. Using the chopper (the mini food processor) and shaking it a bit will give the best results.However I would avoid crushing ice with any attachment you wish to use for other purposes as it will cause premature blunting of the blades (they will still work for ice crushing if they are blunt but will have trouble blending things).

Does this blender have variable speed settings?

Yes there is a rotary knob at the top - where the power cord is - that you can turn. Its a little fiddly for me/my fingers - but it does work.

How long is the guarantee on this? Thanks.

The standard warranty is 12 months. Some suppliers will offer an extension to 3 or 5 years. I have an older version of this blender which has a 700w motor (the new ones are 800w) and it's still going strong, with original attachments, after 12 years!
