Would they work freestanding on a shelf to light an ornament?

Yes, they would be ideal for lighting an ornament on a shelf. The base is sturdy

how long do they last on the batteries?

I have been using mine on and off every day since before Christmas and the light is as bright as ever. As the light us an LED I guess you can expect a long battery life. But of course the more you use it the quicker the batteries will go flat.

How strong is the tape as im worried it'll came off when changing the batteries ?

The answer to your question is, not strong enough, I screwed them in place with small counter sunk screws.

can you turn on immeditaely to lowest setting and your own colour choice (no change in colour ie start and stay with yello)

They have 13 colors to choose from, you can set your favorite color With 3 dimmable modes (20%, 50%, 100% brightness) and timer function (30 or 60 minutes), you can freely press the "+" or "-" button to adjust the brightness according to your lighting needs
