It’s a Sony
Works as advertised; multi region, dvd and BD, easy to install and simple remote for operation.

Works as advertised. The hardware modifications work well to enhance the origiinal equipment
I think the people who had trouble with this machine forgot to read the instructions, including the inserted sheet that covers the hardware upgrade to achieve region-free capability. The first thing I did after testing that I could playa simple Blu-Ray after setting up for my monitor and wi-fi was to upgrade the firmware. Then, one after another I inserted all the 4K discs I own, to be sure they played properly - They did - followed by a variety of Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray 3D, and DVD discs. All played fine - No problems. Then I tried some Region B Blu-Ray discs: I turned off the machine, pushed the blue button until it restarted, and waited for it to load. The Region B disc played properly, too. This is a great player!

No manual, one quick insert on region free, limited existing features.
I would love to give this product five stars, as most five stars here tout the picture and sound and easy plug and play. That's the end of it. Mine did NOT come with a manual or instructions on where one might be..googling was the answer to find Sony's manual extremely limited and overly simplistic leaving out a lot of things you CAN'T do that you expect you can. Mine came with Netflix, Prime and YouTube installed. I had to go online to find out only internet programs "pre-installed" are on whichever machine I own. As TV's get more advanced, being able to play online subscriptions like Hulu, Vudu, Funimation, etc. through this device brings the sound up to date to include streaming in Dolby ATMOS. My tv is old but is a 4K and thus Dolby Vision and HDR content plays very well; however, the new sound standards are not on my TV. Using my X800 I get my compatible DVDs and the three existing subscriptions in the best sound to include Dolby ATMOS. I'm not dead in the water as I have a 4K apple TV which I can plug through my Vizio Dolby ATMOS sound system, yet the X800 decodes better sound yet does not allow other subscriptions than the couple you get with it. A very weak-weakness. The actual quality of the visuals and sound the X800 does produce is very high, just don't expect support on manuals, internet program compatibility, and pre-purchase information. (PS: it does do WiFi connectivity up to 5G, even though WiFi is not mentioned anywhere.)

VERY good not-so-expensive UHD optical disc player
I bought this specific unit so I could play the discs I've collected while living on several different continents. It does that VERY well; it handles different region DVDs automatically; Blu-ray is easily done manually from the remote before playing the disc. And there's NO problem updating the software; the firmware region-free mods stay good. The picture quality is great (even with 3D), and sound is wonderful. This rig has a solid metal frame, and the build quality is good; what you would expect with more expensive machines. Tho' the case IS plastic, when you pick this up, you know it's NOT a 'cheap' unit. It's what I've come to expect from Sony. I forget the correct term, but the size of this item is made for an A/V rack, so it's NOT small. The setup is easy and quick, the WiFi works well (2.5 & 5Ghz), and tho' small and UNlit, the remote is full featured. (FYI - This unit has NO display on the front - you have to start playing a disc and then use the "DISPLAY" command on the remote to see that info on your TV screen.) And, if you have a Sony TV, when you turn the player on, it will turn your TV on as well! This player starts up fairly quickly (even faster if you use the "Quick Start-up" setting), but shutting it off seems to take a little longer than I'm used to, but NOT so long as to be a bother. FWIW, I do NOT use this product for streaming, as I have a 4k Android TV, so I can't comment about that. I took 1 star off because this rig does NOT have Dolby Vision, and GraceNote access ended first quarter of 2019. (Sometimes Sony's nickel-and-diming (greed?) just gets ridiculous.) BEFORE you buy this, I suggest you check out the specs, as, for example, this will NOT work that well with older A/V systems you may already have. I wanted to put the link here to the page on Sony's website, but Amazon won't let me! Also, check the comments on the Q&A for this item...some of the answers are wrong. Enjoy!!

Not so good for SACD
I must admit I was wrong about this player. Although they technically do support SACD and it shows DSD on the screen, the device converts it into PCM signal to output on coaxial S/PDIF connector. Even thought I have a DSD capable DAC, on S/PDIF it only accepts PCM. It might be possible to extract true DSD from Sony's HDMI output, but this is next to impossible. I was not able to find a DAC like this. I cannot recommend this device to audiophiles. Previous review: I have a collection of CDs and SACDs and like to listen to the music, but I cannot afford a high-end system. SONY X800 worked well for me and was right within budget. Previously I had Phillips 963SA, which was not great, but did it's work reasonably well. When it broke, I started looking for a similar player but was only finding hight-end products, which were too expensive for me. When I discovered this SONY X800 and read reviews I was cautious, because previously I already ordered a budget device which was promised to play SACD, but did not. But the Sony was just as described - indeed it plays probably all possible disc formats and outputs the digital audio on a coax port in DSD format, which is great because I can choose what external DAC to use. I can highly recommend this product as a transport for audiophiles, which conveniently allows playing video occasionally.

Great product
We love the fact that we can watch all of the DVD movies I bought when I used to live in China, plus our US purchased DVDs and Blu-ray. Easy to setup. The only thing I do not like is that it does not have fiberoptic output. I have never been a fan of Coaxial RCA like output.

Ticks all the boxes for playback and connectivity.

Tried A and B region and worked fine. However, when connecting usb, it does not run even those files which are supported by ubp-x700. In case you are looking to use solely the blu ray disks, then its fine. Else it will be a big disappointment. Far cheaper and better options are available for that purpose.

I saw Aladdin, with Will Smith and Naomi Scott. I have never seen anything like it, on screen or off it. Compared to the garish primary colours which dazzled audiences in the late forties and fifties, it is a new world, in terms of a wealth of hues which would be a challenge to an artist painter, as they often radiate a light of their own, which we cannot observe in real life. The sharpness of 4 K image nearly makes the 3 D concept un-necessary. Now the 3 D discs proved a failure in my case. I was unable to make the display inviting to adjust both the player and the TV compatible to the 3 D format disappear off the screen. Adjusting the Sony 800 to 3D was easy enough, but I could not find anything to adjust on the 49" Sony XBR. There is no mention of 3D operation in the Owner's manual, nor in the screen display in the Adjustment panels. I was unable to play any of the 3 D I had on hand. I tinkered so much with various adjustments that I had to perform the ritual of Factory reset to at least restore the 4 K setting to its original glory. Considering the 4 K success, maybe we do not need the 3 D format, which could be a hushed failure.
