Hardcore documents the group's beginning as Pre-Punk outcasts in the fertile Akron, Ohio, underground Rock scene. Spawned at the nearby college of Kent State, Devo formed as a conceptual art project armed with the radical philosophy of de-evolution. Recorded on various four-track machines and in tiny studios, basements and garages between 1974 and 1977, Hardcore reveals their strikingly clear vision: Rock 'n' Roll stripped bare of it's collective cool and jerked back into propaganda fit for post-modern man. It's no surprise that these transmissions would soon catch the eye and ear of Brian Eno, who later produced their landmark 1978 debut album. Noisy synthesizer, strangled guitar chops and a primitive rhythmic thud power the early Devo sound. These recordings were made from 1974 to 1977, and they are the early tracks. The feature a lot of electronic music but also some good guitar tracks and base lines. I flavor electronic music, but the guitars here are also very good, and so with this cd you can not go wrong. The music does not sound like the hit song "Whip It", which I can not stand. This is experimental underground sort of music. I listened to them over and over again during the 90s. If you get this cd you can listen in high quality and make your own mp3s, because amazon does not have all of the hardcore devo songs available for individual purchase.
