## Description

Let us be clear: the Shinbu, designed by James Williams, are specialized tools intended for military personnel and special forces operators.James developed this design to meet the specific requests of coalition forces overseas for a more powerful tactical tool than his CRKT Hissatsu; which is in wide use. Historically, military swords have been sized to fit the fighting environment. Long swords, such as the English broad sword and Japanese katana, could only be used effectively on open fields of battle. Fighting in close or confined quarters required shorter swords, such as the sailor's cutlass and the Japanese wakizashi, which is similar in size to the Hisshou. These knives come into play when the operator's firearms cannot be used, as often happens in entry and search operations. They are designed for multiple carry options depending on the choice of the operator. The Shinbu dual grind Tanto blade is YK-30 high-carbon steel, high satin finished. The long, tapered tip grind is designed for maximum slashing power combined with superior penetration. At 13.3 ounces and a 9.25" blade, the Shinbu also offers superior slashing ability as compared to the Hissatsu. James has followed centuries of Japanese tradition in designing these classic cord-wrapped handles, which compares very well to more modern handle materials, giving excellent grip under all conditions. The blade of the Shinbu is laser engraved with Japanese kanji characters that signify "Divine Valor."We have designed custom-fitted Boltaron sheaths with a convertible belt mounting system for the Shinbu. The sheath has detents which grip the knife securely and wide entry lips which allow the knife to be returned to the sheath with one hand. A belt clip can be attached with the Chicago screws provided for vertical carry. There is also a quick-release retaining strap. Each of these knives comes in a custom dark lacquered wooden box for presentation and storage. The Shinbu demands respect and can truly be a lifesaver for the military professional. These are knives that would have been carried by the Samurai. This model of the Shinbu is an updated version of the original 2915.Specifications:Blade Length: 9.25" (234.95 mm)Edge: PlainSteel: YK-30Blade Finish: SatinBlade Thickness: 0.233" (5.92 mm)Grind: FlatOpen Length: 14.75" (374.65 mm)Weight: 13.3 oz (377.05g)Handle: Cord-Wrapped HandleStyle: Fixed Blade Knife with SheathSheath Material: Boltaron

Review: A practical all purpose COMBAT knife! - I have owned this knife's big sister the Hisshou for about a year and I love it, the Hisshou is a very very powerful slasher that could easily decapitate a person. However, because of its size and the curve of the blade its is a poor stabbing knife, and I would say that while it is great for quick draw and slash it is horrible and a quick stab, It is just too damn big! The Shinbu fixes that problem with little sacrifice. The Shinbu is a excellent slasher that can make deep cuts and probable take off some limbs, and it is a excellent stabbing knife. I would say I like it better then the Hissatsu for stabbing. Its smaller size allows for quick and easy deployment out of the sheath and unlike the Hisshou it does not feel strange to try to stab with it. The sheath allows for customization, easy carry, and rapid deployment. Keep in mind that the blade is YK-30 and it will rust if not maintained, mine came oiled out of the box, and proper cleaning and applying a dab of oil to the blade after use will prevent any rust. All in all the Shinbu is a more practical knife then the Hisshou, while not as powerful as a cutter, its smaller size allows it to be a excellent stabbing knife in addition to being a powerful slasher. The Shinbu is also easier to carry as the Hisshou massive size can allow it to get tangled in gear. If you want a great general purpose COMBAT knife get the Shinbu, if you want to scare the hell out of people get the Hisshou! I have and love both!
Review: Excellent Cutter - I bought the Shinbu as a companion to the Hisshou. The Shinbu came out of the box wickedly sharp and after cleaning off the protective coating on the blade, I was able to perform cutting tasks very few blades can do out of the box. I was impressed with the balance, grip and cutting ability. CRKT has found an excellent balance between cost and performance. This is not a bushcraft or camp knife you can chop down trees and split wood with. It is a very effective defensive tool well suited for slashing and penetrating soft targets. It penetrates so effortlessly that the lack of a hand guard is not an issue. The wrapped cord handle provides excellent grip. Finally, it makes an excellent companion to the Hisshou. If you want to replace your hatchet with a knife this isn't it but if you enjoy tamashigiri type sports or want a defensive tool that will end an attack in less than two seconds then it will do nicely.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this knife come with a wood box?**
A: Yes, a fitted wood box (for blade only, not sheath) with a brass latch. Box is marked CRKT and the name of the blade in English and Chinese characters. Nicely done.

**Q: DOES IT COME WITH PRESENTATION BOX?**
A: Yes it comes with presentation box

**Q: how sharp does it come and what would be the best method of sharpening**
A: It comes extremely sharp and will shave hair off your arm. Considering the beauty and esthetics of the knife I would not attempt to sharpen it myself, I would look for a professional who could put a professional looking edge on the knife.

**Q: What if I'm buying the knife for a gift for my friend and I need to give to them for military use ! Does the warranty still cover ?**
A: The warranty is on the knife. Your friend will have the warranty as well!

*by R***R on September 23, 2011*

Disappointed in the Quality for the price. Discolored handle, Cheaply made Sheath. Looks like what you would find in a fleamarket.
