Yes, the light strings we included are warm white

How do you attach these to a wall without damaging the paint?

I personally used clear small pushpins (thumbtacks). The are holding up well and its the tiniest hole to the wall. Maybe doublesided tape might work if not too strong. Its not heavy.

Is there a trick to get the battery compartment open?

No it just slides open, I did have to figure out getting it back on straight though that took a few tries
