Review: An excellent book for challenging Intermediate/Advanced French students - This is an excellent short novel for any French teacher looking to challenge Intermediate/Advanced French college students and introduce them to the concept of diversity in France. It allows for class discussions about the role of French colonies in French national identity, the effect of socio-economic status on opportunity, and different cultural traditions from France, the Antilles, and the Maghreb. My students really enjoyed it. As a personal read, it is a touching story about family misunderstandings, cultural adaptation, and growing up.

This is an excellent short novel for any French teacher looking to challenge Intermediate/Advanced French college students and introduce them to the concept of diversity in France. It allows for class discussions about the role of French colonies in French national identity, the effect of socio-economic status on opportunity, and different cultural traditions from France, the Antilles, and the Maghreb. My students really enjoyed it. As a personal read, it is a touching story about family misunderstandings, cultural adaptation, and growing up.

Wonderful book that will touch all those who like to read about French immigrants. Gisele Pineau has become one of my favorite authors thanks to her book Exile selon Julia. The language is very simple and as a French teacher I would highly recommand this book for honor or AP French students.
