T. S. Eliot's most famous drama , a retelling of the murder of the archbishop of Canterbury Murder in the Cathedral , written for the Canterbury Festival in 1935, was one of T. S. Eliot’s first dramatic achievements, and it remains one of the great plays of the century. It takes as its subject matter the martyrdom of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, depicting the events that led to his assassination, in his own cathedral church, by the knights of Henry II in 1170. Like Greek drama, the play’s theme and form are rooted in religion, ritual purgation and renewal, and it was this return to the earliest sources of drama that brought poetry triumphantly back to the English stage at the time. "The theatre is enriched by this poetic play of grave beauty and momentous decision." — The New York Times Review: Literary masterpiece - I had heard of this title, but didn't realize it was a play on the martyrdom of Becket. Only T. S. Eliot would recover some debate Greek tragedy format! Lol! T. S. Eliot is really only for those who love literature and have read much of it, because he constantly alludes to his wide experience of reading literature. In the end, some beautiful food for thought here, a format that really works and a damning condemnation of Anglicanism and the placing of God under King. Review: Easy to read - Read for church book club

Decent Condition, Great Book
The book that arrived was an older edition than the one pictured. It also contained more marginalia and underlining from a previous owner than I expected. However, the play was intact and will also remain an amazingly written classic.

Such a timeless story
This is so eloquently written and poignant. Phrases of Eliot's poetry remain in my mind for a long time, since they are so richly evocative. I sympathize with the story of friendships betrayed, internal conflict, civic and religious duty, coming to terms with mortality, etc. I saw this play performed when I was about eleven or twelve, and it has stayed with me.

I wanted to fall in love...
I really wanted to love this play but I found it hard to get involved in. Perhaps it's the old style of writing, or perhaps it's me - which is more likely since this play is a classic. I wanted to fall in love with it but unfortunately I did not. Sorry, T.S.

This is a great play by an awesome writer
This is a play that I will read over and over again...with a big dictionary close by. T.S. Elliot is a master of dense prose that is descriptive while conveying a much deeper message. I loved how much it forces me to stretch my mind and my vocabulary. Great story with a religious theme and a great message.

Confused Prose as Half-Hearted Poetry
This should have been a dialogue. Groups of 3, or 4, priests or tempters speak very contrived lines. They become more contrived with cheap rhymes that actually hinder instead of help the cadence. The hero returns from France. The message or story of Thomas Beckett does not occur except through the rainy lens of meter. Or free verse. I don't know what it was. I found this all to be very plastic for good reading or historical setting. Maybe the performance is what matters. I am planning to read "Lamp at Midnight" so I can compare, but I do not recommend T. S. Eliot's "Murder in the Cathedral" for eloquent reading or historical or metaphysical enlightenment.

Great book
This piece of literature is a must read for any book enthusiast. The paper back was something I purchased because I didn't want to ruin my hard back that sits on my book shelf.

One of my favourite dramas
I first came across Murder in the Cathedral at college around 1950 and of course then had a copy. Over the years and a few moves the copy disappeared. I moved on to his Four Quartets and forgot the pl;ay. Then about three weeks ago I found that it was being put on in a local church and went. Suddenly it all flowed back - the pleasure that his alnguage has always given me and the depth of his ubderstanding of the many layers of human life. I go to a U3A playreading group and it was my turn to go to the library and choose the next play. I went, thinking it would not be there but it was. With some trepidation I chose it. To my delight the rest od the group found it a strong and welcome experience, both emotionally and intellectually. There were not quite enough copies for us all, so I came to Amazon for the extra two . Apart from the convenience , I am so delighted to have this masterpiece on my shelves again. If anyone wants to get some of the real taste of it.I would vertainly suggest getting a group together to explore its depths. It is essentially about a diverse community responding to a crisis, and I think it needs to be read in company.

Evoked no emotional response in this reader
The story of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket told in the form of an ancient Greek drama. Although the work is highly praised, I found that it did not evoke an kind of emotional reaction. The one surprising thing about the work was that it provided a good justification of Becket's killers.
