A collar of this type should be used while working with the dog, and removed, for best safety practice, when the dog is loose and not closely supervised. Even a canvas dog collar can be caught in a fence, and result in the injury or death of a dog. I’ve known of this happening, with an Alaskan puppy I sold to another dog musher. So I’m speaking from first-hand knowledge. Many breeders, with lots of dogs in kennels, remove collars while their dogs are kenneled and unattended. This, of course, works best with strong, well fenced, well-maintained kennel fencing. We all know what escape artists some dogs can be!
