Some inner bark had oriignally been left on for accent color and seemed to be the main areas new cracks formed that gave a way in fo tenacious bugs and fungi that attack through extreme summer heat, long rainy season, and some brutal snowstorms. That discoloration and rot was in and amongst the still-super-strong spar varnish that permeated the wood quite deeply. It bounced off and burned up so many sanding pads and stripping tools, and more agressive tools would have ground away the woods natural look.
